Gothic clothing? Check. Black eyeliner? Check. Now, what about your hair? Maybe you’ve had the same haircut for a while and are ready to change it up.

If this sounds like you, then you've come to the right place! Here are seven alternative haircuts for anyone who wants to make a rebellious statement - complete with tips on how you can style them.

Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them)

Styles Weekly

An asymmetrical hairstyle is very popular among the alternative fashion community. What’s great about this hairstyle is you can do it at any length! A bob with one side longer than the other is a common asymmetrical hairstyle, while another cut is the A-line cut, where the back is short and the front is long.

Asymmetrical hairstyles look good with any type of hair, but for the most daring look use a flat iron to straighten your hair. Asymmetrical cuts look good with bold hair colors, so go ahead and add in some streaks of a bright color.

Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them) - Undercut

Want something more extreme than an asymmetrical cut? Try an undercut. An undercut is where you shave all of part of one side of your hair, generally keeping it long on the top (some people just shave a patch towards the front, while others do the entire side). A twist on the traditional undercut is to do the undercut on the back of your head. This is great for people with thick hair, since it thins it out. Some people shave designs into the hair too!

What’s great about this look is how you can style it! If you want to show off your undercut, part your hair to the side and let the shaved side show. Want to hide it? Give yourself a middle part, or part your hair on the opposite side of your undercut. Not sure if you want to commit to an undercut yet? Try french braiding a section of hair in front of the ear on the side of your head and pinning it back. This gives the illusion of an undercut!

Emo Style - Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them)

A definite throwback to the golden era of Emo, a razor haircut consists of lots of choppy layers, often dyed jet black (but the colors you choose remain completely up to you). Short, choppy layers will make your look more extreme, and longer layers will have a more subtle effect. This haircut often has a deep side part and big, swooping bangs that cover the eyes. This cut looks best on hair chin length and longer - but feel free to mix it up and experiment with different lengths!

Style your razored haircut by straightening your hair completely and then teasing the upper layers and adding some product or secure with accessories to make sure it holds. If you have shorter hair, you can wear hair extensions to add length.

Mohawk Inspo - Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them)

The mohawk is a classic punk haircut. The original mohawk has shaved sides with the center strip of hair fixed up, but there are actually many variations on the classic mohawk. One is liberty spikes, which is where the hair is worn up in spikes. A deathhawk is also a popular mohawk style, particularly among goth subcultures. A deathhawk can be completely shaved on the sides or just short, with the middle part backcombed up. A Chelsea hawk is simply a mohawk with bangs, and fauxhawk is a mohawk without the shaved sides - often constructed by french braiding the sides of the head and creating a layered ponytail over the crown to give the appearance of a mohawk. This is a great option to test out the mohawk if you’re not sure you want to commit to it.

Mohawks are a high-maintenance hairstyle, so be prepared to spend lots of time on your hair if you have one. You’ll need to backcomb your hair and use a strong hairspray - sometimes even glue - to keep your hair upright. The longer your hair, the more upkeep you’ll have to do (but the more striking the effect).

Pixie Cut - Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them)

Short Hairstyles

Pixie cuts are a great way to show off your features! Whether you go for a spiky short cut or a more feminine, razored cut, there’s a pixie haircut for you. One of the biggest features of a pixie is the bangs. You can do short all over with a longer fringe over the eyes, or you could do asymmetrical short bangs. Super short pixie cuts are also great for all types of hair; but if you want something even bolder than a pixie, try a buzz cut! This style is easy to take care of and will make you stand out from the crowd.

There are tons of ways to style a pixie haircut. For example, you can use hair gel for a messy, bedhead look. For a retro pompadour look, backcomb the bang area and pin it back in fauxhawk fashion.

Dreadlocks - Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them)

Dreadlocks are less about the haircut and more about how you style it, but they are so prevalent in the goth and alternative community that they’re worth a mention. Dreadlocks can be worn long, short, or somewhere in between, and they work best if your hair is mostly the same length.

You can get your dreadlocks styled at a salon, or you can do it at home with your own hair. You will need to backcomb your hair regularly and train it to stay in locks, so it goes without saying that this is a high-maintenance hairstyle and it requires regular upkeep. If you’re not sure you want to commit to dreadlocks, try it out first by using hair pomade to separate out and twist your hair into temporary locks.

Gothic Hair - Seven Alternative Haircuts (and how to style them)

Wylona Hayashi

A traditional gothic haircut is long and straight with no layers; the ends are cut very bluntly, and you can wear this style with or without bangs. This style often has a middle part, but if you want to add a modern twist, try a slight side part. If you want bangs, ask for V-shaped bangs that are pointed and longer in the center. Depending on your style, you can make this more or less pronounced.

Gothic hair in the traditional sense is usually straight, so get out your flat iron. And be aware that black is arguably the most common hair color for this particular style, so consider getting your hair dyed if you don’t already have black hair. With this style, it’s important to keep your hair in top condition, so make sure you take good care of it so that it stays smooth and shiny.

Now you know seven different alternative haircuts that you can try out. Which haircut will you get?

Alternative hairstyles are popular options for teenagers and young adults, but choosing just which alternative look suits you best isn't always easy. These styles are very personal and should reflect your personality and interests, and if those interests change quickly it can be difficult to alter a radical style.

Types of Alternative Hairstyles

There are four basic types of alternative hairdos to consider:

  • Emo: Emo hair styles are one of today's hottest trends, and you can opt for long emo hair or short emo hair. Most emo hair color is dark or includes stark color contrasts, and straight hair is generally preferred to pull off this look.
  • Goth: Gothic hairstyles are similar to emo hair cuts and in fact both types of cuts have similar origins. Goth styles, however, are usually longer and darker, projecting a harsher appearance. Romantic gothic styles are also popular and may include luscious curly hair and even longer, wispy locks.
  • Scene: Scene haircuts are related to the music and cultural scene and can change rapidly as styles and fashion trends change. Brighter colors and edgy cuts define many scene styles.
  • Punk: Punk hair styles are the most outrageous type of alternative hairstyles and include heavily sculpted locks such as spikes and mohawks as well as bright, unexpected colors.

Personalize Your Look

While these basic definitions help outline each type of style, the key to a great alternative look is matching it to your personality. In that sense, anything goes in terms of your hair color, length, cut, and style - be alternative by turning the look into one that is uniquely you. Even classic hair styles can be alternative looks if they are personalized. A simple bob hair style, for example, can be alternative if it is pink.

Alternative Isn't for Everyone

Alternative hairstyles are not suitable for everyone. Before you bring out the hair dye and scissors, consider:

  • Damage: Frequent use of dye and heavy styling products can damage hair.
  • Dress Codes: Outrageous colors and distracting styles may not be permitted under a school or work dress code.
  • Trends: The style that is hot today may be cliché tomorrow, so choose wisely to find a style for you.

Alternative hairstyles can be fun and fashionable if you choose the best one for your personality and flair. LoveToKnow Hair has dozens of articles, photo galleries, and slideshows on alternative looks to help you find just the right look for your life.

Long Messy Beachy Hair

Q&A with style creator, Madison Lea Ann
Hairstylist @ Tony’s Hair Co. in The Colony, TX

How would you describe this look?

I really love this look just for the pure fact that it was so bold, but yet looked so natural. I took her from a grown out balayage from back in April. She told me she wanted to be super blond but still liked that when it was growing out there was no define line and that she couldn’t tell it was growing out so fast. So I decided to do part balayage and part foliage. I toned it with the Shades EQ line which I love because it always helps pull together a color. Now, cut wise we didn’t do much because she likes her hair long so I just trimmed up her ends and did layers, nothing fancy.

For styling, I always put a detangler in all my clients’ hair I’ve done color services on whether or not it’s super tangled. I also use a blow dry product in! It’s always different, just depends on what I want to see for end results. I used a 1-inch curling iron for this look as well and then I ran my fingers through it to break up the curls for her finishing look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Almost anyone who can pull off being a blond can wear this. Now, if you style your hair every day or even pretty often that’s where we get into at-home care. You have to use good professional shampoo and conditioner if you want it to stay in good shape. Because if you buy from a grocery store let’s say, for example, I can’t assure you it’ll do the job and I also can’t assure you that what’s in it is actually true. (Sulfate free, and color-protected shampoos are the most important to have). Also, sometimes with certain people’s hair, it doesn’t hold the “toner” as long so I always suggest a purple or blue shampoo for at-home keep.

Now leave-in conditioner is always a good idea if you’re this blond because you want it to stay hydrated and moisturized so it doesn’t get dried out and feel brittle. A heat protectant along with it is even better! Always have a heat protectant if you’re going to be styling your hair with any type of hot tools. The upkeep on this look is actually quite easy if you have all the right products! You can do so much with this look as well. Wear it natural, curl it, and even straighten it. You can wear it in braids or a top knot. It’s such a pretty natural bold look that you can do about anything with it and people will still compliment you on it!

Big Bold Afro

Q&A with style creator, Aggie
Freelance Hair Artist in PG County, MD

How would you describe this look?

This is a huge purple afro hairstyle with messy kinky curls. I wanted it to look like a 5-day old twist out. The best thing about this look is how big, bold, and vibrant it is. I cut and styled it to frame my face and also to bring out my facial features.

Anyone considering this look has to be willing to wear it with confidence. It is very “out there” and you’ll draw a lot of attention so just be ready for that. As far as maintenance and products, water is your best friend. Just spray it with water, finger detangle, and clip off the stray bits. To achieve this look, I used 5 packs of purple crochet hair. I also brushed it out to make it less defined and much bigger. I have a round face and I love framing my hair around it. If you have a long face, a middle part will look great. Side parts will also work for anyone if you are unsure how to style/frame it.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This hairstyle doesn’t need a special occasion, it could be your everyday look especially if you love playing with colors and big hair. It also works for festivals, artistic events, and photo shoots. Remember, water is your best friend! A bit of leave in conditioner is fine as well, just don’t overdo it. Last but not least, wear it with confidence!

Jet Black Retro Curls

Q&A with style creator, Ronella Santhumayor
Freelance Hairstylist in Mumbai, India

How would you describe this look?

This particular style is one of my favorites. It’s a very boho, retro like hair. You can wear it as a casual hairstyle or can team it up with a hair-tie or bandana to give it that extra edgy retro look. It works well with someone who has long hair with medium to a thick density that isn’t too layered. Her hair has a dark tint almost chocolate brown like which goes well with her skin tone. However, lighter hues or highlighted hair work well with this kind of style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you are looking at creating such a hairstyle for yourself, you should have hair that isn’t too straight, heavy or limp. The hair should have a slight grit which can hold curls. To create that grit, one should prep the hair well.

Start by applying a small amount of hair mousse evenly to damp hair (I use the Schwarzkopf Taft hair mousse.) Then blow dry the hair to completely dry. I used a 22-inch barrel tong and vertically tonged the hair in one direction and away from the face. Finish with some hair or shine spray. Toss your hair around a bit scrunching it with your fingers and voila you have big retro hair. Perfect for a cocktail party or a night out.

Retro Beehive

Q&A with style creator, Tess Bradley
Stylist @ Douglas J Salon in Rochester Hills, MI

How would you describe this look?

I love how dressed up women used to get for everyday life. My goal for this look was to use hair color and wardrobe to modernize a retro shape creating an updated version of that 1950’s everyday glamour. The greatest part of this look is how the vibrant hair color really highlights the bold shape.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This style is bound to turn heads but can be customized to suit many different face shapes, hair textures, and personal styles. The height in this style will elongate round or pear face shapes but could be less exaggerated to suit longer face shapes as well.

I used a hair pad to create extra fullness, height, and longevity. This technique could also be used for clients with finer hair to create the illusion of more fullness. Thick-haired clients could use their own hair as hair padding.

Someone with a retro/rockabilly look could rock this every day, wrapping it in a scarf at night to help it last the whole week. This would also suit someone with more of a classic style, especially for a wedding or special occasion.

It would be difficult to achieve this look on hair shorter than the shoulders but a talented stylist with a passion for hair styling has lots of creative solutions. I would call around to local salons or search Instagram to find a stylist who is passionate about classic styling techniques. If you are thinking of trying something new, I say go for it! Styling is a great way to try something new and express your style to the world. Why not have fun with it!

Incredibly Shaggy Mid-Length Cut for Older Women

Q&A with style creator, Sandra Ulloa
Stylist @ The Lab A Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look?

There are so many variations of the shag these days. I cater to a lot of artistic types and hand full of musicians these days. This shag, in particular, that’s on Ame is a disconnected one. Due to the fact that she has finer hair through the sides and back, I can’t take too much length or layers. She’s ever so slightly top heavy.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I recommend this type of disconnected shag on finer to medium hair types and if you don’t want to spend too much time in the morning styling it. I do mostly dry cutting. Her hair is unforgiving so the soft texture is key, no bold lines whatsoever. I love dry cutting. It’s like tailoring a cut to your head.

Color: Balayage Wella Lights 20v with B3, L’Oreal Majiblonde 20 V with B3, L’Oreal 6n + 7bg-10v

I look at my clients’ fashion, but honestly, the girls who request this kind of cut normally is fashion conscious already. I’ve never had a woman who approached me with this cut who couldn’t pull it off already. I mean this cut goes with very well with high fashion, punk, rocker, boho chic, and trendy, all of the above fits into a shag.

Long Asymmetric Cut

Q&A with style creator, Erika Volivitch
Hairstylist @ Hair Design by Erika Volivitch in Orange County, CA

How would you describe this look?

I had so much fun doing this cut and color. I love the asymmetrical haircut because it makes it stand out and is different from what’s “normal”. The cut looks super cute both straight and curled!

This client has been doing this color for a long time because she rocks it so good! She’s got that sassy personality to go with this “sassy” haircut. I use Keune color for her deep red base color and then Pravana for her bright red ends. Now for this color, I did have to use bleach on her ends to create the bright red balayage look. But as long as your client is ok to keep up with possibly some treatments at home to keep those ends healthy then go for it! Her base is also red but a deep red.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Her face shape is more oval/diamond. Short haircuts look great so their face doesn’t look even longer with long haircuts. Her hair is naturally pretty straight with just a slight wave to it, so for her, it’s pretty easy to go straight or curled. Because it’s short for this client, her curls stay in really well with little to no hairspray.

She’s on a good regimen at home using Keune styling products: 2 phase moisturizing spray (for damp hair after shower, before blow-dry) & shine serum (before or after blow-dry). She also uses a Keune deep conditioning treatment once a week at home: Keune Care Line Vital Nutrition. For shampoo and conditioner, she uses Keune Care Line Vital Nutrition. She’s a client who is good about taking care of her hair at home, and in turn, keeping her hair color last longer in between salon visits! Upkeep on her hair is a salon visit about every 5-6 weeks.

Long Shag with Micro Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Shelby Grassman
Stylist @ Bishops Clifton Heights in Cincinnati, OH

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is a messy lived-in shag. The greatest thing about this cut is that it gives my model a high fashion edgy look without the need for excessive styling.

The cut is really versatile and customizable for any head of hair! It’s also very easy for my model to style, and it’s definitely a “get up and go” kind of look. Not to mention, it’s a really fun way to mix things up with long hair!

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice for achieving this look is attitude is everything. I am one of those stylists that believes that if you want something (cut, color, etc) then you should do it! You can rock it if you have the confidence. Of course, I would also say that with a cut like this most people will be styling their hair and using products on a daily basis.

My model is just lucky to have naturally wavy hair, as it really brings this cut to life and allows her to not style it as much. However with this haircut, we were a bit worried about her density, she has fine hair and not a whole lot of it. We styled her with her natural waves using Osis ‘Bouncy curls’ and ‘Tame wild’ and diffused. Then I took a flat iron and perfected some little pieces to give a more polished look.

The main finishing product we used was a texture powder from Osis called ‘Dust It’. I used it to fluff up her hair sprinkling it over her curls and her bangs to really give her that messy sexy “rock n roll” vibe.

Modern French Bob

Q&A with style creator, Danielle Badger
Hair Designer @ This or Die Salon in Los Angeles, CA

How would you describe this look?

This short haircut is a Mod Bob with a straight across fringe. What I love most about this is that you can make it sleek, mysterious and sexy or fun and playful (like in the photo). This particular client cut off about 8 inches of outgrown color, and with a proper cut, it looks like she just received fresh balayage color.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you are thinking about hair trends like this, ask yourself – are you a fun and funky person with an edge? This look can be worn by the majority of people. It’s just a matter of how you style it and how short/long the fringe is. The fringe makes it edgier if it’s short and bold versus a longer bang.

The big thing to consider would be the maintenance of the color. Look for products and learn how to take care of it at home.

Use a color treatment paraben sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and also a protein hair mask once or twice a week depending on the health of your hair. Wash with cool water 2-3 times or less a week.

Apply a heat protectant styling product before subjecting to heat (blow dry, flat iron, curling iron, etc), and keep the heat low. Finish with an alcohol-free hairspray. You can use dry shampoo in between washing.

This look is for the non-conservative type of girls.

Not So Mellow Yellow

Q&A with style creator, Jess Basham
Hair Artist @ Heatwave Salon in Ridgecrest, CA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as fun, edgy, and unique. It’s definitely a “not so mellow yellow”. My client is so fun and has such a beautiful skin tone. She gave me free reign on her hair and I knew this color choice was a must!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Not a lot of people can wear neon yellow hair, but I knew she could! I would let anyone wanting this color to know that their hair needs to first be lifted to a pale yellow and treated with many different types of reconstructing and conditioning services prior to applying the creative color.

Aftercare consists of using color-protecting shampoo along with using heat protective products for styling. I used all Redken styling and color care products for her hair with a 1-inch iron for her waves.

Teal and Black Asymmetrical Cut

Q&A with style creator, Andrea Valle
Hairstylist @ Hair Loft Studio in New Orleans, LA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as powerful, strong, and fierce, yet still feminine. She came in with one side cut short and the other side longer hitting her shoulder, which I immediately loved. I cleaned up the existing cut and created an angle with graduation for fullness on the longer side. She had the best face shape for it.

I tapered the shorter side, so blending and connecting the two sides was my absolute favorite part. Most of all, she wore it with pure confidence.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Edgy hairstyles for short hair like this are for people who are looking to make a statement and aren’t afraid to be bold! Short cuts like these are definitely high maintenance when it comes to keeping the shorter side looking fresh.

As for styling, I believe it’s pretty low maintenance. Just add some curls and a little texture spray and carry on!

Edgy Asymmetrical Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Aubrie Davidson
Licensed Stylist @ Perfect Image Hair Design in Columbus, OH

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as an edgy hairstyle twist on a pixie cut. It is very versatile as well!

In this photo, we have it smoothed out with some texture on top, but you can also add a fun loose wave or even blow it out and comb it back for a fun pompadour! You can change the part or wear it flat and smooth. The looks are endless!

This pixie is asymmetrical which is my favorite thing about it. The long fringe in the front against the tight fade really makes for a fun and edgy look!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This haircut is perfect for someone with a longer face. My client has a longer oval face shape and it really accentuates her! You have to be comfortable with a tight hairline and a little scalp exposure, although this cut can be modified!

My client’s favorite part about it is the length on the fringe. We wanted a pixie that showed off her beautiful face and slender neck without cutting it so short all over. The longer fringe allows her that comfort length in the front while still giving her an edge!

To achieve this style, we used Aquage Uplifting Foam and Aquage Sea Salt Texturizing Spray before blow drying. After drying, we slid a flat iron through and pieced it out with Aquage Transforming Paste to really bring out the razor part of the haircut. We finished with Kenra Volume Spray to last her all day!

This cut is best achieved with a more dense hair texture. If you’re not looking to spend all morning on your hair routine, quick and easy hairstyles like this one are a great option!

Edgy Asymmetrical Bob

Q&A with style creator, Hayley Elizabeth
Hairstylist / Owner @ Prism Beauty Bar in Tyler, TX

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as an edgy asymmetrical bob with a shaved side.

My favorite thing about this look is the confidence it gives my guests. My favorite thing about the haircut itself is the texture and volume.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The first thing I would tell a guest interested in this haircut is that the haircut is a commitment. Contrary to popular belief, edgy short hairstyles are actually more maintenance than long hair! A client should come in to get edged up every two weeks to keep it looking clean, especially with a shaved side, and come in for regular haircuts every four to six weeks.

When thinking about a bob as a stylist, you want to take face shape into consideration because you don’t want to give your guest a haircut that isn’t going to accentuate her best features. This short, textured bob is perfect for heart-shaped faces and she can wear it curly, wavy, or straight.

Also, for most edgy bob looks, the guest absolutely needs to make time to blow dry and style using a medium round brush (I used the Paul Mitchell Neuro medium round brush). While educating my guest on blow drying techniques, I also make sure they know what products to use in order to achieve this look at home. It’s always best to purchase take-home products from a stylist instead of the local beauty supply store because we can educate our clients on how to use each one specifically for different hair types and textures. It’s also supporting the stylist!

Because the guest pictured has fine hair, I used the Paul Mitchell Invisible Wear line. We started with the shampoo and conditioner to add volume and shine. For styling, I used the Invisible Wear Volume Whip and finished her look with the Invisible Wear Undone Texture Hairspray.

A texture hairspray is a MUST with any edgy hairstyles!

Vibrant & Fierce Pink Pastel Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Chelsea Marie Berry
Stylist @ Harlow Salon in Nashville, TN

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a very edgy, “be your own style” look. My favorite part about it is how you can’t miss this person when you pass them. It is vibrant and fierce.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you are someone who has flexibility in your hairstyle and you like messy finishes as much as clean, this look could be a good option for you. This cut would be great for straight, wavy, curly, or fine to medium hair types. This style would be great for diamond, heart, oval, round or square face shapes.

The style time for this look would be as short or long as you like. I definitely suggest a root lifting product. My favorite is Milkshake’s Texturizing Spritz. I also recommend good leave-in conditioner like Milkshake’s Whipped Cream, and for hold, I love the Milkshake Shaping Foam. All of this goes on damp hair.

After drying, if using heat to style, I recommend a heat protectant like Heat Defender from Tigi. Finish with a texturizing paste like Milkshake’s Texturizing Cream. Keep the hair clean and sleek, or rock out it by messing things up a bit.

Edgy Undercut Design

Q&A with style creator, Jane Yi
Hairstylist @ Society A Salon in Sumner, WA

How would you describe this look?

This look is bold, edgy, and definitely a head turner! I love how it gives someone the ability to change up their look by simply throwing their hair up in a bun. As soon as the hair is taken down, you can’t see the design!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look can be achieved on pretty much any hair length, type, and texture. It can start as high or low as you want, but I usually recommend a one, two or three guard on clippers for the perfect length to create a design. You can go longer if not.

Someone with extremely thick hair that wants to get rid of bulk can rock an undercut! I’ve also given mini undercuts to my short bob clients who have low hairlines. This is a little more upkeep because it’s so short and grows back so quickly, but that just means you can start fresh and try different designs!

Fruit Stripe Gum

Q&A with style creator, Melissa Maria
Owner @ Seven Sins Salon in Lakewood, CO

How would you describe this look?

My favorite thing about this color in particular is that it is on a male client of mine. For years the beauty industry has shamed men and women for going out of the box when it comes to hair color. This color has boosted the confidence of this client. To have someone leave who is utterly happy and has the courage to rock a color so bright, warm, and vibrant such as this makes me feel altruistic and accomplished.

My salon is a place where women and men of all ages should feel comfortable about their appearance, even if that means thinking outside of the box! Who wants to be “normal” anyway? We didn’t have much of a plan for this color, so to describe it is a little difficult. I had to compare, I would say it’s like Fruit Stripe Gum on acid.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The advice I would give to someone who’s considering going with a colorful look would be to be mindful of upkeep and maintenance. A color like this can take anywhere from three to seven hours to create, depending on the length of your hair and how light we are able to get. In order to do colors such as these, lightening the hair past orange to a pale white yellow base (with no damage) is key!

Special Effects direct dyes are not permanent! They are semi permanent which means they do not penetrate the cuticle of the hair. It only stains and sits on top of the cuticle, meaning the color lasts only about three to six weeks. Maintenance on these colors is not the easiest. If you want these colors to last as long as possible, then you must wash in cold water, wash only one to two times a week, use a Sulfate Free Shampoo, and a Glycerin-Free Conditioner, stay out of chlorinated pools, and avoid heat styling.

Anyone can wear a color like this, but the most important things to remember are quality and value. You must find a hairstylist who has experience in conducting colors such as these and never expect to have something done like this last minute. It is always very crucial to have a consultation and a clear understanding of the process, how much you are going to be spending, and the pros and cons of having a color like this.

Edgy Purple and Green Undercut

Q&A with style creator, Arienne Alvarado
Aveda Certified & Licenced Cosmetologist @ Ari’s Hair Lab in Mathis, TX

How would you describe this look?

If I had to put a name to this style I would call it “Edgy Elegance”. Even though the colors are a little unorthodox, I believe that if the hair is done well and it’s styled well, there is no reason why having a color in your hair that is not a “natural” hair color should be deemed unprofessional. With the right attire and the right makeup, you can easily take this look from everyday wear to a night out. It’s all about what you pair with it that can give the look its edge or it’s elegance.

The one thing I love about this look is the colors. The effect they have on each other and the style itself is incredible. The four colors that we applied in my client’s hair give her style depth and dimension that actually helped conture her mohawk in a way that having one solid color could not do.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look in particular is something that can be achieved by anyone that’s willing to take the time to maintain a mohawk. Many people believe that it’s all about face shape when it comes to what kind of style you should have. For me, that’s not the case. I believe that if you have the confidence to rock your look, then rock your look!

When it comes to the maintenance of having a mohawk, you have to be willing to either learn how to shave the sides of your head, or be willing to come into the salon at least twice a month to keep your style looking its best. When it comes to the products you would need for this, having one or two just isn’t going to cut it. For this client’s look, we used Redken Pillow Proof Express Primer to blow dry, our salon’s line of thermal primer for her curls, Sexy Hair’s Play Dirty texturizing spray once it was curled, and finished the look with Sexy Hair’s Spray and Stay firm hold hairspray.

This look in particular is fairly easy for her to maintain because of the fact that she is very thick and coarse curly hair. For fine or straight hair, having a mohawk is a little harder to keep up with. You’d have to train the hair to fall a certain way and use different products.

I always try to encourage my customers to take a chance on a new hairstyle because you never know if it’s going to change your look or your style for the better. One thing is for sure though, you’ll always wonder what you would look like in that cute little haircut if you don’t give it a chance!

Super Short Blonde and Jet Black Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Jo’Kita Johnson
Hairstylist @ Hair Cuttery in Virginia Beach, VA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a two-toned, edgy textured pixie cut.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice for someone considering this look is to be fun and willing to go outside the box. This is a very low maintenance haircut because you only have to blow it dry, add some texture paste to break it up, then piece it apart.

If you like looking different, love texture and want your hair out of your face, then edgy hairstyles like this textured pixie is for you!

Emerald Green Short Edgy Hairstyle

Q&A with style creator, Esther Spicer
Mini Salon Owner & Hairstylist @ Salon Lofts – Roswell Marketplace in Roswell, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this as an emerald green faux pixie. I love how the green is jewel toned and rich green is definitely one of the harder colors to pull off if you don’t get the vibrancy right.

Also, I love the diversity within the style. We didn’t have to cut any of her long hair to create this illusion of a short hairstyle. So when she takes it out, she will still have her long hair just melted into green in an ombre style. It’s so fun to be able to switch up your look without the commitment.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I use Brazilian Bond Builder (B3) in every chemical service I do to ensure the hair’s integrity after every service. I always recommend that my clients take home the shampoo and conditioner to keep the bond builder in their hair which also helps the color stay vibrant longer than other color-safe shampoos.

I prelightened the hair up to a level 9, power dried, and custom mixed Pulp Riot color for the green. As for the style, I blow dried with Surface orange bassu oil, which serves as a heat protectant and keeps hair hydrated, as well as Paul Mitchell’s Neon smoothing cream which can smooth out even the most stubborn texture. I used Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shaping cream to isolate and control the hair while I braided the sides.

For the top, I used a 1-inch curling iron to smooth out and create a tousled curl effect while spraying Kenra’s Volume hairspray for volume and a high hold. This style can easily last up to a week, refreshing it with dry shampoo and wrapping the top at night to keep the curls in tact.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style is perfect for the guest that has some texture but hates to do her hair. With only having to touch up the top, it will save a lot of time in the mornings. It’s great for someone that loves to change up their look but isn’t ready to chop off all their hair. I think we’ve all been curious as to what we’d look like with a pixie.

The green is great for someone with a funky style or bold personality. Expect to turn heads and be approached left and right when you are rocking any fun color in your hair!

Always keep in mind that vibrant “fashion” colors are going to be a lot more high maintenance than natural hues. Say goodbye to hot showers, make dry shampoo your best friend, and come in every four to six weeks to touch it up. All in all, it’s totally worth the extra maintenance. Once you go unicorn you don’t go back!

Dark Green Edgy Shoulder Length Hair

Q&A with style creator, Jacob Linden
Stylist & Colourist @ Urban Nirvana in Charleston, SC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a truly unique, funky edgy look! The radiant vibes leave one contemplating whether to look at the color or the haircut first. The color is mesmerizing in the way that it melts to this multi-dimensional mossy green, which is my favorite part of the whole style.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To maintain and recreate this look, I recommend using a texture spray such as Shu Uemura Texture Wave. The texture spray is what provides the hair with a full and layered look for this particular style.

I also recommend having an oil on hand, preferably Kerastase Elixir Ultime Oil. This particular oil will do a number of things such as give the hair a polished finish, bring in the shine, and accentuate the color.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is a style that can be glamorized by anyone, depending on the mood and feel of the individual. The color is exquisite and can give off a number of facades. It can play the part of being the spotlight of an individual’s style, or be relegated to toning down a style that needs a more deepening tone.

The bangs are employed to bring out the features in a more narrow-faced client, while the short layers provide a plethora of volume for tasteful and edgy hairstyles like this one.

Q&A with style creator, Karel Silvester
Hairstylist @ Kinki Kappers in Alkmaar, Noord-Holland,

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I was inspired by Anime for this look and I think it’s a daring and edgy hairstyle.

What I love most about this look is that it really provokes people’s mind. Some love it, some hate it, and some grow to love it.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used a powder (Kinki’s Super Power Powder) for a dry and rough base, as well as a matte clay (Lock Stock & Barrel’s Ruck A) to give it more hold. I advise not to wash this hair more than two times a week and really rock that out of bed look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style to my more daring customers, the ones who are not afraid to stand out and be different. Having thicker hair is also a plus. This technique of layering could also be used on a lob at the front. You could really accentuate the layers by using different colors for each layer.

My client on the photo has been rocking a bob for some time and was looking for something different. The front is a classic asymmetrical bob which makes the back stand out even more. This client is in her 60s and way cooler than most of my clients in their 20s!

Edgy Platinum Blonde Streaks & Red Tips

Q&A with style creator, Liz Friday
Hairstylist & Make-up Artist @ Atomic Hair Studio in Ladner, BC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is edgy, editorial and fashion forward. It’s all about versatility and texture.

My favorite thing about this look is the contrast. It’s smooth and sleek around the face with lots of layers and textures making up the back.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Since this look is all about texture, I would definitely recommend a texturizing spray or paste for styling, as well as a strong hold hairspray to hold everything in place. As for maintenance, a volumizing shampoo and conditioner would work beautifully.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is for the edgy client that’s looking for the perfect alternative yet wearable hairstyle.

A Super Edgy Punk Hairstyle

a super edgy punk hairstyle for women

Instagram @thewidowspeakparlor

Consider a super edgy punk hairstyle that’s buzzed all around. The top was razored for texture to give it an effortless punk style that can be achieved at home.

This cut is extremely easy for a woman who wants to just style and go. Depending on your hair type, all you’d need to do is smooth your punk hair using a hairdryer and brush. For fine hair, you can add mousse before drying.

A trick for extra volume or spikiness is drying the hair in the opposite direction you plan on wearing it, then take a pomade to rub it in your hands and push the locks back over using your fingers.

Adding a hairspray will help keep your punk hair in place. The amount of volume on top and how you wear the front/bangs area can be adjusted to complement your face shape!

Hot Pink A-line Punk Hairstyle

This a-line punk hairstyle is edgy, youthful, and fun. It was created by stylist and colorist Marcie Kowalski of Jessup, MD.

“The color used in this photo is from the new Manic Panic Professional line. Punk rock is making a comeback, and Manic Panic, which was one of the first punk hair color companies has evolved as well. The placement of the hot pink dye is offset by the natural gray hairs on her head. It’s a fun blending of those three colors using slices and weaving techniques,” she explains.

She goes on to say, “fashion colors are super fun but also incredibly difficult to maintain. Pink hair is probably the most difficult. If you’re going to take the leap to fashion colors, just know you’ll potentially bleed on pillowcases and towels. Coldwater is key.”

70’s Punk Blue Mohawk

This 70’s punk blue mohawk is edgy, alternative, and not for the faint-hearted. “The color works amazingly with alt girl hairstyles like this one,” says alternative barber Alexandra Karen of the UK.

This punk rock hair isn’t for women with very fine or fair hair, or with a round or oval face shape.

“Spiked hairstyles like this are more of the music-inspired mohawks from the late 70’s punk era. So if you’re into punk music, this would be perfect,” she states.

For styling, Karen suggests trying Swartzkopf Mowhawk Dust with an extra hold molding spray. “If you use wax, it can weigh down the Mohawk and it won’t stay in the style for long.”

Pinky Bob Punk Haircut

This soft punk bob was handcrafted by apprentice stylist Chantelle Haines of Grande Prairie, AB. “The different shades of pink hair color and the soft layers, with the blunt perimeter, make this punk look the perfect transitional step to going full punk,” says Haines.

The versatility of this cut is amazing! You can wear this sleek and sophisticated or rock it out with some crazy texture and curl!

Haines says to try a smoothing balm and a strong-hold mousse. “The smoothing balm and mousse allow more control over those crazy strands!”

“Take a leap with a semi-permanent color and let your freak flag fly with confidence,” she adds.

Disconnected Mullet Punk Hairstyle

disconnected mullet punk hairstyle

Instagram @brianaguilarhair

This modern mullet is very disconnected with tons of texture. It’s is a playful take on one of the most popular punk rock hairstyles from the 80s.

This is definitely a more fashion-forward style of possible rocker hairstyles. It’s not just punks of the 80s that can pull this style off. A bold personality and aesthetic are required, too! The best thing about the modern mullet is that it works best when slightly unkempt, so not a lot of styling is required.

At most, use a dry shampoo and texturing paste such as Aveda’s Control Paste or Verb’s Sea Texture Creme for a piecey, undone punk vibe.

Wild Thang Hairstyle with Shaved Sides for Punks

This wild thing hairstyle for punks is a disconnected haircut with shaved sides. It was created by independent stylist Ruth Phillips of Youngstown, OH. “It features a deep violet against the yellow, and of course, a hand-painted leopard pattern!”

For women considering punk haircuts, Phillips says to remember that this print can easily be cut out after your sides grow a bit to leave a fairly low commitment color.

“Conversely, if it’s something you’d like to keep long term, you will need to sit and have your color done and the pattern painted back on at each haircut, or possibly every other, depending on how much of the pattern is cut out,” she adds.

The Green Lantern Undercut Pixie Punk Hairstyle

This undercut pixie is called the “The Green Lantern” of punk hairstyles. It was created by co-owner and stylist Jason Murray of Mill Valley, CA. “It features strong lines, texture, and the color makes it all pop,” he explains.

To pull off alt hairstyles, Murray reminds us there’s a lot of maintenance to keeping high fashion colors like green. “This means changing it up. Keeping it sharp is essential!”

Awesome Spiky Hair for Punk Rock Girls

Not as dangerous as it looks, spikes on your punk hair are exhilarating cool. Pair your spiky short hair with bold hair color and some visual undercut.

Pompadour Mohawk Punk Hairstyle

This pompadour mohawk was created by stylist Lindsay Wolf of Portland, OR. “The punk style features lots of height built up from the front all the way to the nape of the neck, with each side buzzed,” explains Wolf.

If you’re considering punk hair styles like this, it’s ideal for women with a strong bone structure and an oval face shape. “This punk hairstyle requires time for styling and a few amazing products, so it’s definitely not a low maintenance style,” she adds.

For styling, Wolf says to try Oribe Volumista Mist for volume. “Spray from your roots to the ends prior to blow drying with a small to medium round brush. Follow up with Oribe Superfine Strong Hairspray to lock in hold, then lightly mist with Oribe Shine Reflecting Spray for a glossy, glass-like finish. Voíla!”

Dope Short Punk Hair with a Long Emo Top

Messy Joan Jett Shag for Modern Day Punks

This is a classic Joan Jett shag for modern day punks that can be worn many ways. It was created by creative hair artist Brit Taddei of Beaverton, OR. “The versatility of this cut can be worn super messy and textured and styled very dramatically, or it can be kept simple and toned down while still having an edge,” she explains.

This punk cut can be accentuated with many color options as well, which makes it such a diverse and classic rock and roll haircut for women wanting to try something edgier.

“You definitely have to be bold to rock alternative hairstyles,” she adds. “This cut can be customized for any face shape. You can also wear it with or without a fringe. It also looks amazing on mid-length to long hair.”

Texture paste and volume boosters will be your friend while styling this hairstyle. Try Kevin Murphy Volume.Boost, Bedroom.Hair, and Night.Rider texture paste.

Recreated Mullet with Bangs Punk Hairstyle

“This is a statement hairstyle that is not for the faint-hearted! The recreated mullet is back with more dramatic angles and texture in all the right places,” says creative hair artist Sophie Wilson of Sydney, AU.

“Blow dry in a volume cream for texture and shine. Once dry, spray in a salt mist and scrunch the hair for that gritty punk vibe. Lastly, use a matte wax to piece out and accentuate the alt style,” she explains.

This is so versatile and can be tailored to all women, but it would work best on a woman with medium to thick hair. It will flatter a heart, oval or diamond face shape.

“This cut is also nice for women with a large nose, as it draws attention away from it with the hard angles,” she adds. “It can also open up the face of punk rock women with small features.”

Deathhawk Hairstyle for Punk Girls

This is a teased punk mohawk called “Deathhawk” hairstyle for punk girls. It was handcrafted by salon owner and stylist Crystal Terror of San Antonio, TX. “Punk hairstyles for long hair like this, aren’t just a fashion statement, they’re super punk rock.”

“Use Joico Cobalt/Peacock Green semi-permanent color and Pravana Neon Greens,” explains Terror. “For the shaved side, use a Wahls peanut trimmer. As for the style, it was backcombed and teased. The whole hawk was sprayed with Bedhead Masterpieces. Ask your stylist about hair gel that’s just as effective a for long-lasting hold.”

Women with medium to coarse textured hair are the easiest to tease into a wider mohawk style like the Deathhawk. It’s not a good idea to style fine/thinning hair like this. Most face shapes work with this style, too.

Blonde Punk With Style on Top

“This blonde cut could be described as punk with style, the grungy answer to a precision haircut,” says hairstylist Angel Indelicato of Philadelphia, PA. “It’s got some triangular shape with very choppy short layers. It looks great on naturally wavy hair.”

Indelicator says to try top products like Lanza’s Texture Spray, Puff Me Volumizing Powder, or even Kevin Murphy’s Rough.Rider are perfect for grunge hair. “You really need a dryer feeling, gritty product to get that hair to stand up and to provide the broken up texture in the ends,” she adds.

This short punk hairstyle works great on hair types between straight and wavy. You could go for it curly though! Depending on how you push this haircut around makes it more punk or more polished.
