Rock tumbling grit

"Rock tumbler grit", also known as "rock polishing grit", is a silicon carbide powder that is much harder than the types of rocks that are commonly polished in a rock tumbler. If it is tumbled in a barrel with rocks and water the abrasion caused by the grit particles rounds the sharp edges off of the rocks. We use about two level tablespoons of grit per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler and 1/2 tablespoon of grit per pound of rock in a vibratory tumbler.

Individual Grits

Coarse Rock Tumbler Grit (60/90 Silicon Carbide)

Coarse grit for rock tumblers

60/90 Grit
Step 1 (Rotary)

This is the grit that most people use in STEP 1 of the rock tumbling process in a rotary tumbler. It is an ungraded 60/90 mesh silicion carbide granule. In a rotary tumbler we use about two level tablespoons of grit per pound of rock.

Caution: Do not dispose of used grit, polish or rock slurry down a drain.

Medium Rock Tumbler Grit (150/220 Silicon Carbide)

medium grit for rock tumblers

150/220 Grit
Step 2 (Rotary)
Step 1 (Vibratory)

This is the grit used for STEP 2 of the rock tumbling process in a rotary tumbler. It is also used for STEP 1 in a vibratory tumbler. It is an ungraded 150/220 mesh silicon carbide powder. We use about two level tablespoons per pound of rock in a rotary tumbler and about 1/2 level tablespoon per pound of rock in a vibratory tumbler.

Caution: Do not dispose of used grit, polish or rock slurry down a drain.

Fine Rock Tumbler Grit (500F Silicon Carbide)
Also known as "pre-polish"

fine grit for rock tumblers

500F Grit
Step 3 (rotary)
Step 2 (vibratory)

This is the grit used for STEP 3 of the rotary rock tumbling process and STEP 2 of the vibratory tumbling process. It is a 500F silicon carbide powder that is used immediately before the polishing step. In a rotary tumbler we use about two tablespoons per pound of rock. In vibratory we use about 1/2 tablespoon per pound of rock.

Caution: Do not dispose of used grit, polish or rock slurry down a drain.

What does the "F" mean? See questions and answers about grit at the bottom of this page.

Measuring Spoon - One Tablespoon

grit measuring spoon
Stop using the measuring spoon from the kitchen to measure your grit and polish. We use a separate measuring spoon for each grit size to avoid cross-contamination of grit sizes. We keep these spoons in the container with their respective grit size. It's really convenient to have a spoon in the grit container. No more hunting and washing measuring spoons!

Extra Coarse and Ultra Fine Grit

These are grit sizes that we don't normally use in our own rock tumbling. However, we do use them occasionally, and some people use them on a regular basis.

Extra Coarse Grit (46/70 Mesh)

Extra coarse 46/70 grit for rock tumblers

46/70 Grit

This grit is much coarser than the 60/90 mesh that is normally used in the first step of rock tumbling. We recommend that it be used in tumbler barrels that have a capacity of at least six pounds. It is ineffective in three-pound capacity barrels. Another use is when you are going to allow a barrel of rocks to tumble for one month. In that situation you want a grit that will not break down to small particles before the end of the month. Long-duration tumbling is the only time we use this size grit in our own tumblers.

We did a few experiments to test the effectiveness of extra coarse grit. You can read about the results at the bottom of this page and in our article about extra coarse grit.

Caution: Do not dispose of used grit, polish or rock slurry down a drain.

Ultra Fine Rock Tumbler Grit (1000 Silicon Carbide)

Ultra fine 1000 grit for rock tumblers

1000 Grit
Pre-Polish

Some people who are trying to achieve the ultimate polish add a 1000 mesh grit step right before polishing. You can get great results without this step, but people who tumble in contests or are working towards the perfect polish think that this step is the way to go. We rarely use 1000 grit in our own tumbling; we get great results on most materials without it. However, we always use 1000 grit as a final step before dry-polishing fluorite, calcite, dolomite and other materials with a Mohs hardness of four or less.

Caution: Do not dispose of used grit, polish or rock slurry down a drain.

Common Questions About Rock Tumbler Grit

Sand vs Grit

Q: Can I Use Sand Instead of Rock Tumbler Grit?

Yes, you can if you want, but we bet that you will change your mind after the first batch of rocks. Here are the advantages of using rock tumbler grit (more formally known as "silicon carbide grit")...

1) Silicon carbide grit is very hard. It is much harder than the rocks that most people tumble. On the Mohs Hardness scale silicon carbide has a hardness of 9 to 9.5 while commonly-tumbled rocks such as jasper, agate, quartz and petrified wood have a Mohs Hardness of about 7. This means that silicon carbide grit can easily abrade the rocks that most people tumble. However, most beach, river, and wind-blown sands are composed of quartz, which has the same hardness as the rocks that most people tumble. Since it has an equal hardness, it will be ineffective at abrading them in the tumbler barrel.

2) Quality silicon carbide grit usually occurs in angular particles. That means they have sharp points and edges that facilitate abrasion on the rocks while tumbling occurs. However, most beach, river, and wind-blown sands have rounded particles, which makes them ineffective at abrading the rocks that you are hoping that they will grind.

3) Rock tumbler grit can easily be purchased in sizes that are perfect for rock tumbling. To duplicate the coarse, medium and fine grits used in rock tumbling you would have to purchase a set of sieves, find sand of various particle sizes and separate it into the grit sizes needed for rock tumbling. We are willing to bet that you will burn more gasoline and time chasing these special particle sizes of sand than you would spend buying some good grit. It isn't that expensive.

In summary, you can use sand instead of rock tumbler grit. But, if you do that, the sand may not be effective at cutting the rocks because it has the same hardness as the rocks and it usually occurs in rounded grains. You will probably waste a lot of time and electricity trying to save money using sand instead of rock tumbler grit. We have an article titled "Can I Use Sand Instead of Grit?" that explains all of this in much more detail.

Grit sizes

recycling grit

Q: Would You Explain the Grit Sizes Used for Rock Tumbler Grit?

Lots of people ask about that. We have an article that describes the man-made material known as "rock tumbler grit" and a chart that explains the various grit sizes. The title of the article is "What is Silicon Carbide Grit?". The Wikipedia article for "silicon carbide" also has a lot of good information.

Q: Can I Recycle Rock Tumbler Grit?

The practical answer to this question is "no," but we will explain the "yes" part in a few sentences. When you place your loaded barrel on your rock tumbler and turn it on, the particles of grit will become caught between the tumbling rocks in the barrel and each time that occurs the grit places a small scratch in the surface of the rock. Over the hours and days of continuous tumbling this happens millions or billions of times.

All of this abrasion wears the sharp edges off of the rocks and smooths their surface. It also does some damage to the grit. The grit particles also break and wear down during the tumbling process. So at the end of a week of tumbling your coarse grit will be in a much larger number of particles and each of those particles will be smaller than what you started with.

If you had a screen with a very fine mesh, you could pour the muddy liquid in your tumbler barrel through it and wash all of the mud through. A lot of the granules that remain on that screen would probably be small particles of silicon carbide grit. However, it would be "spent" silicon carbide grit and the value of that grit is probably less than the value of the time that you will spend and the soap and water you will spend cleaning-up after your recycling work.

So, even though you "can" recycle a little bit of grit, we don't know anyone who has tried to do it more than once. :-)

If you see grains of grit in the barrel after tumbling instead of trying to recycle it, consider one of these two actions. A) Run the tumbler a few more days to wear out that grit. It will probably improve the roundness and smoothness of your stones. (You might also try using a little less grit if the rocks that you are tumbling have a Mohs Hardness of less than about 6 or 7. These rocks don't wear out the grit as rapidly.) B) Consider that your barrel might have been too full. If you are filling your barrel more than about 2/3 full, your rocks might not have enough room in the barrel to tumble properly. So, the barrel is going round and round and the rocks are in that barrel locked in a big mass. Reducing the amount of rocks by just a little will give them more space to tumble and give your grit a chance to do its job.

Extra coarse grit

Q: Why Don't You Use Extra Coarse for Extra Fast Grinding?

We used to think that extra coarse grit would be a great idea.

Here's a story..... We had some beautiful big pieces of Ohio Flint and they were REALLY REALLY hard. We tumbled them for a full month in 60/90 grit silicon carbide and added 50% extra grit to sustain grinding the entire month. (We also added extra water to dilute a month's worth of mud!) At the end, the pieces had worn down a bit but they still needed a lot more tumbling to get the shape that we wanted.

So we bought some 20 mesh grit with the idea that it would tear up that flint quickly. Heh!

We added the normal amount of 20 grit and ran the tumbler for a month. At the end of the month we opened the barrel. Lots of that 20 grit had survived! Almost all of it had survived. It was almost the same particle size as when we started - it was only slightly smaller. And the flint was not rounded as well as if we had used our normal 60/90 grit. It was not a lot better than when we started.

We have used 20 grit for several other materials with the same results. Why isn't it effective??

When you use 20 grit the particles are really big but there are very few of them to do the grinding. However, when you use 60/90 grit there are a LOT more abrasive granules in the barrel and they grind away everywhere.

We have also experimented with 54 mesh grit. The particles of 54 grit are much larger than the blend between 60/90 and it is large enough to do more aggressive cutting. However, there are still not nearly as many granules in the barrel to do the work of cutting.

In summary, whoever first decided to use 60/90 grit in a rock tumbler knew what they were doing. If you want to read the results of our experiments with extra coarse grit you can find an article here. If you don't believe us and want to try some 20 grit yourself, click this link to add two pounds to your shopping cart for $9.99.

1000 grit

Q: Would I Get a Better Polish With a 1000 Grit Step?

We use 500 or 600 grit as the final grinding step before polishing 99% of the time. We get great results and do not think that the extra time and expense of a 1000 grit step is needed. We might use a 1000 grit step if we were competing in the Worldwide Rock Tumbling Contest. We would use it just to be sure that our rocks were extra ready for the polishing step.

But, otherwise, the only time we use 1000 grit is when we tumble a very soft material such as fluorite or calcite. We use 1000 grit as the last grinding step in a vibratory tumbler. We then do the polishing step dry, in a vibratory tumbler, filled with crushed corn cob media that has been treated with TXP Polish or Rapid Polish. The entire bowl is filled with corn cob, we add about three level tablespoons of polish per pound of corn cob, and we only add a few pieces of the rock we are trying to polish.

One-thousand grit is really expensive. Unless you are polishing rocks for the Queen, or are preparing for dry polishing, we don't think you need to use an ultrafine grit step.

500F grit

Q: My Grit Is Labeled 500F. What Does the F Mean?

When you see a grit number followed by the letter "F" - that means that the grit has a finer (smaller) grit size than the number. For example: 500F means that the grit is finer than 500 grit. "F" means "finer".

Buying guide

This article is broken into a few sections based on intended use of the tumbler. We’ll also talk about some of the things to look for when choosing the best tumbler to buy.

In this guide:

What to look for when buying a rock tumbler

The first thing to consider is what will be the intended use of the tumbler you want to buy?

Are you buying this for a child?

Are you buying this for yourself because you want to start making jewelry?

Let’s take a look at some of the things you should look for when choosing a tumbler. For this article, I will not be talking much about kids tumblers. I have a separate article on this topic which you can find here.

Here are some things you should look for and consider when deciding which is the best rock tumbler for you:

Barrel size

One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make when choosing a tumbler is what size barrel to get.

When shopping for a tumbler, you’ll notice that sizing is expressed in weight – the most common size for beginners and hobbyists being 3 lb.

Put simply; a 3 lb barrel means that for each load, you should use 2 lbs of rocks with the other pound being made up of grit and water.

For beginners and those who just want to tumble as a fun pastime, you’ll most likely want a 3-4 lb tumbler.

For folks who are more serious about the hobby and want to be able to tumble more rocks, a 6 lb or 12 lb tumbler would be your best bet.

For commercial use, you’ll want to look at the larger 20 lb and 40 lb heavy-duty machines.

If you’re new to the hobby, it might seem like bigger is better.

Well, that’s not necessarily true.

The size you choose depends on two things really: how many rocks you want to tumble at a time, and what size rocks you want to tumble.

Rock tumblers have to be filled with a certain amount of grit which is dictated by the size of the barrel, and how many rocks you’re tumbling.

So if your barrel is too large, you might end up having to make up the difference with grit and other forms of media.

You should always try to fill your barrel about 65-75% of the way with your rocks. So if you buy too large, you’ll have to buy more rocks to meet the minimum recommendations of the tumbler.

It’s imperative not to fill your tumbler with anything less rocks than what the manufacturer recommends. The reason for this is that it can negatively affect the way your rocks are tumbled, and can often break or crack your rocks.

On the flipside, if your barrel is too small, you’ll be limiting yourself to the size of the rock you can tumble as well as the amount of rocks in a single load.

Keep in mind that one load of rocks can take up to 6 weeks to tumble properly. So you’ll want to plan and batch your rocks accordingly.

To get a general idea of rock size for the average 3 lb tumbler here is a good rule of thumb to follow:

  • 50% of your barrel should be 0.25 – 0.5” diameter rocks
  • 25% of your barrel should be 1” – 1.5” diameter rocks

It’s important that each of your loads contain various size rocks for optimal performance – you don’t want to tumble JUST small rocks.

Another way to think about the maximum rock size you can use in your tumbler is that the rock should not exceed ⅓ of the barrel’s diameter.

So on the popular Lortone 3a tumbler for example, the barrel diameter is about 4”. That means the largest rock you should use in this barrel is about 1.33”.

This is not a perfect science, rather just a good rule of thumb that’s easy to remember.

If you think your rocks may be too large, you can always break or cut them into smaller pieces.

Barrel material

The material of barrels has come a long way since rock tumblers were first made famous back in the 1950s.

In the beginning, barrels were made out of materials like paint cans and were loud enough to wake your neighbors in the middle of the night!

Today, barrels are primarily made from either plastic or high-quality rubber for the optimal rolling of the rocks as well as noise reduction.

The lower end, kids tumblers are usually made with plastic since it’s cheaper to do so.

Any tumbler that’s not considered a toy will use a high-quality rubber (with the exception of much larger commercial tumblers which will use metal casing with rubber lining).

One of the bigger concerns people have when deciding whether to get into rock tumbling is the amount of noise the tumbler makes. After all, these machines run 24 hours a day for weeks at a time.

So if you’re in an apartment or even a small house, it can be very annoying to listen to the noise regularly.

That’s why it’s so important to get a rubber barrel. While it will still make noise, the noise will be muffled and much more pleasant – it sounds a bit like waves at the beach pushing around rocks.

It’s also important to note here that the smaller your barrel, the less noise it makes (since there are fewer rocks inside).

Rubber barrels also help promote better rolling of your rocks as well as a more cushioned surface to prevent any damage to your rocks.

Multiple barrel configuration

One of the cardinal rules of rock tumbling is always to put rocks together of similar hardness according to the Mohs scale.

For example, agate and jasper are two of the most popular rocks to tumble. Both are a form of quartz, so they have a very similar hardness. These would be perfect to tumble together.

Alternatively, you would never want to combine quartz with fluorite. Fluorite is much softer than quartz and would most likely disintegrate if combined with a harder type of rock like quartz.

So what do you do if you want to tumble both kinds of rocks at the same time?

Get yourself a multi-barrel tumbler!

Simply group your rocks by hardness and put into separate barrels.

The other huge benefit to a multi-barrel tumbler is that you can run batches in different stages – let me explain.

Since a single batch of rocks can take several weeks to complete, you won’t be able to tumble other batches until the current batch has completed it’s cycle.

If you plan on tumbling large amounts of rocks, this can be a dealbreaker.

So instead of buying a second tumbler, just get one with multiple barrels. You can start one batch today, and another batch a week from now – no need to wait!

It’s like having two tumblers for the price of one!

Brands

If you’re buying anything other than a toy tumbler for a child, you’ll want to go with one of the better brands out there for their better build quality and longer warranties.

Lortone and Thumler’s are two of the best, and make a full line of tumblers (from 3 lb all the way up to 40 lb).

While the design of a tumbler may seem simple, there are a lot of parts that can go bad or break when cheaper materials are used.

Remember that your tumbler will be operating 24 hours per day for weeks at a time – so the motor and belt (among other parts) needs to be high quality if you want it to last for any period of time.

The better brands will also have better warranties. Most Lortone and Thumler tumblers will have a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Rotary vs. vibratory tumblers

When most people picture a rock tumbler in their head, the image that comes to mind is that of a rotary tumbler – the most common type.

But there is another kind of tumbler which is meant for different applications and worth mentioning in this article.

They’re called vibratory tumblers and are best used for the later, polishing stages of the tumbling process.

Without going into too much detail (because I already talked about this in my rock tumbling guide here), a vibratory tumbler should only be used to polish rocks – not to shape.

While rotary tumblers polish rocks in the final stage, the advantage to a vibratory tumbler is that the polishing is done much faster than in a rotary.

Because of this, a typical setup with serious rock hounds can be to have both types of tumblers so they can do their shaping/smoothing in the rotary, then move to the vibratory for faster polishing.

Rock tumbling kits

If you’re buying a rock tumbler for the first time, you should consider getting yourself a complete kit to help get you started.

Most kits will come with all four stages of grit/polish, rough stones, and maybe even some tumbling medium like plastic pellets.

Buying a complete kit like this is a very good idea to get started quickly – especially if you’re buying this as a gift for someone!

Final thoughts

I hope this article was helpful and you now have a better idea of which tumbler may be best for you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments below!

Make Your Own Rock Tumbling Grit Substitute

Rock tumbling is an excellent hobby for both children and adults alike. The beautiful gemstones you create with rock tumbling can be turned into jewelry or just simply displayed in a rock display case for the world to enjoy.

Unfortunately, getting started in the rock polishing hobby can be cost prohibitive for many people. A good quality rock tumbler can cost you anywhere from $100 all the way up to $300. In addition, You also need to buy rock tumbling grit to get to the nice polished look you want. For a look at the best rock tumblers that are high quality and reasonably priced, read my review on these rock tumblers.

For those of you that are looking to cut costs, there are options when it comes to finding a rock tumbling grit substitute, so as not to break the bank.

Is There A Good Substitute For Rock Tumbling Grit?

It is possible to make your own rock tumbling grit substitute. It requires a lot of time and work because it is necessary to bring the homemade tumbling medium to an even consistency.  In order obtain that consistency, you need to use screens to filter the material as you go.

The biggest danger in not having an even and consistent tumbling grit is the potential of scratches. Having even one large grain with your finer blend will result in unwanted markings and scratches.

What’s Rock Tumbling Grit Made Out Of?

Commercial rock tumbling grit is made out of silicon carbide. This is the best tumbling media or “tumbling grit” for rocks.

The first thing many people consider using when looking for a substitute tumbling grit is sand. The problem with sand is that it is too soft.  Sand generally has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 of the mohs scale of hardness.  Whereas silicon carbide is significantly harder at 9 to 9.5 on the mohs scale.

The rocks you are tumbling, like quartz, amethyst and almost all other types of rocks are 7 or above on the mohs scale. You could literally tumble for months and not see any change at all in the way your rocks look.

How to Make Your Own Rock Tumbling Grit

There are people that have experimented with making their own rock tumbling grit substitute. Some of which work fine, and others that do not work at all. The key is to get out there and experiment.

Since it’s difficult to match the hardness of silicon carbide, the biggest downsides to making your own grit is that it will take longer to polish than regular grit as well the potential of unwanted scratches by having grit that’s not consistent.

First Stage/ Rough Grit Substitute

For the first stages of rock tumbling, where more rough grit is required, try these substitutes. Keep in mind that the entire process will take a couple weeks longer than if you were using commercial rock tumbling grit.  And remember to never overfill your tumbler!

  • Silica sand. This can work as a substitute grit. The process will take a couple weeks longer than commercial rock tumbling grit. Silica sand can be found at your local sandblasting company.
  • Sinterblast is an economical brown sintered aluminum oxide blasting grit. Sinterblast is gaining in popularity and is also recyclable. It comes in 30, 36 and 60 grades.
  • Ask a sandblaster near you for other ideas you can use as a rock tumbling medium.

Polishing Stage/ Fine Grit Substitute

A homemade rock tumbling grit substitute mixture you can experiment with is a mixture of flour, sand, salt, and fine crushed rocks.  I’m not sure how well this mixture would work, but I’m doubtful it would be very effective.  The only way to find out would be to try it!

Rock Tumbling Plastic Pellet Substitute

During the polishing/finishing stage, try experimenting with these substitutes for plastic pellets. These fillers will protect your stones from scratching each other as they tumble.

  • Cut up rubber bands
  • pea-sized river stones
  • Cornmeal
  • Sawdust or wood shavings

Not Ready To Make Your Own Rock Tumbler Grit?

Not quite ready to tackle making your own rock tumbler grit? That’s not a problem.  Below are two of my top choices of tumbling medium you can get, that won’t break the bank. Both of these are excellent choices for all levels of rock tumblers.

What Is The Best Rock Tumbler Grit?

1. Polly Plastics Rock Tumbler Tumbling Media

2. National Geographic Grit Refill for Rock Tumbler

Best Plastic Filler Pellets For Rock Tumblers

Maybe you already have the tumbling grit you need for your rock tumbler, and just need the plastic filler pellets.  If that’s the case here is the best plastic filler pellets for rock tumblers that I’ve been able to find.

There are lots of plastic filler pellets available, and you would probably do fine with any of them, but the Evostrom Polypropylene plastic filler pellets give you the most pellets for your dollar.

Conclusion

Like many of you, I don’t have a ton of extra money just sitting around that I can spend on my rock collection and rock tumbling hobby.

So for those of you that are like me, I put together a post where I take a close look at the rock tumblers that Harbor Freight make.   The post is called Harbor Freight Rock Tumbler Review: The Best Economical Rock Polisher.  Harbor Freight has come through for me on a pinch more than once.  And they don’t fail on me here either!

Have you experimented with making your own rock tumbling grit substitute? Let us know what worked and what didn’t work for you.  Leave a comment below and let us know what we can use as our own DIY grit!

Finally, in thought, he reached the institute, and was happy to learn that classes had been canceled today. it was quarantined. He slowly trudged back, on the way going to the store, and bought a gay porn film.

Cora answered us, and I immediately had the idea that if androids carry and give birth to children for the "Amazons". Then everything should be like earthly women.
