Command Blocks are special blocks in Minecraftthat you can use to execute commands. These can be customized to do a variety of things to automate things on your Minecraftserver.

Players can do fairly complex things with Command Blocks, and they can be placed in a connecting chain to activate a series of commands to automate processes.

How to get a Command Block

Note that only server admins can make Command Blocks.

For Minecraft Bedrock Edition, you’ll need to do the following:

Enable cheats in your world or Realm settings.
Turn on Creative Mode in your world or Realm settings.
Open the chat box and enter “/give [your username] command_block”
Place the block where you want it.

You can turn off cheats and Creative Mode after you’re doing placing the blocks in your desired location.

For Minecraft Java Edition, you’ll need to do the following:

Go to the “server.properties” file in your server’s config files.
Change the line that says “enable-command-block=false” to “enable-command-block=true”
Give yourself a Command Block by opening the chat box and entering “/give [your username] minecraft:command_block”
Turn on Creative Mode by typing “/gamemode c” in your chat box.
Place the Command Block where you want it.

You can turn the game back to Survival Mode by typing “/gamemode s” in the chat box after you place the block.

How to set up a Command Block

Once your Command Block is placed, there’s a couple settings you’ll see when you interact with it.

Choosing between “Impulse”, “Current” or “Repeat”, and “Chain” will decide when your Command Block activates.

Impulse will make the command run once and stop.

Current or Repeat (depending on your version) will make the command repeat consistently while powered.

Chain will make it so the block will only run after the connecting Command Block runs, allowing players to set up more complex systems.

A Command Block set at “Unconditional” will run no matter if the previous Command Block ran successfully. “Conditional” makes it so it’ll only run if the previous Command Block ran.

You can also set your Command Block up to be powered by Redstone. Selecting “Needs Redstone” will make it only activate if the block has Redstone. Selecting “Always Active” makes the command run regardless.

Whatever command you want set up goes into the “Command Input” section. You can use it to kill enemies if you don’t like a particular one or other things. Minecraft commands can be a little complicated at times, especially when using it in Command Blocks, but you can check out a list of commonly used commands here so you don’t have to do the heavy lifting yourself.

9 Cool Minecraft Commands for Awesome Gameplay

Teleport Anywhere: /Tp

The teleport command in Minecraft is by far one of the most useful cheats. You can teleport to specific coordinates using the following syntax:

/tp Player x y z

Once you have the hang of how coordinates work, you can quickly warp to important locations across your world. It's also possible to teleport to any player or object using the /tp command by replacing the coordinates with a name.

Locate Nearby Objects: /locate

Looking for the nearest village, mansion, or mineshaft? With the locate command, you can pinpoint the coordinates of nearby objects like so:

/locate buriedtreasure

The above command returns the coordinates of the closest buried treasure. Use this information with the teleport command to quickly get where you need to be.

Count Objects: /testfor

With the /testfor command, you can count the number of players, mobs, and other objects within a given area. For example, the following command returns the number of llamas in a 50-block radius of coordinates 75X, 64Y, 75Z:

/testfor @e[x=75,y=64,z=75,r=100,type=llama]

Control the Time of Day: /time set

It's possible to set the exact time of day for your Minecraft world. Use the following set up:

/time set 0

The above command sets the time to dawn. Midday represents 6000, dusk is 12,000, and night is 18,000. Play around with the numbers in between to control time incrementally.

Ride Any Creature: /ride

You can ride animals in Minecraft by taming them, but using the ride command cheat is much easier:

/ride Player mob

Whichever mob you choose will spawn under you. You won't be able to control them, but it's fun to hitch a ride on a bat. You can even ride upon the shoulders of other players.

Share Your World: /seed

A seed code is a unique ID assigned to each Minecraft world. To find your seed code, enter this command:

/seed

You can then share your seed code with friends so that they can generate an exact replica of your world. You can also do a Google Search to find Minecraft seed codes shared by other players.

Manage Your Inventory: /dropstore

Managing all your tools, ingredients, and other items can be a challenge with limited inventory space. Use this command to store your entire inventory in a chest:

/dropstore

With this trick, you can easily sort and manage an endless supply of materials.

Control Where You Spawn: /setworldspawn

Want to always spawn in the same place when you start the game? Use the following syntax to set specific coordinates:

/setworldspawn x y z

If you omit the coordinates, your current coordinates will become the spawn point for your world.

Clone Blocks: /clone

The clone command comes in handy when building villages since you can essentially copy and paste entire structures. You can define a range of blocks to copy and a location to paste them using the following syntax:

/clone x1 y1 z1 x2 y2 z2 x3 y3 z3

The first set of x/y/z variables represents the starting point for the range, and the second set is the endpoint. The third set is the location where you want to paste the copied blocks. You'll need to do a little math, but it's easier than rebuilding the same structure over and over again.

Commands in Minecraft can make the game a lot easier. Sometimes it's enjoyable to just run around and explore without needing to struggle to get there. It's not really the same in Creative mode, but Survival with commands or cheats on can help find that perfect balance between the two.

Sure, it disables achievements and some hardcore Minecraft players will frown upon it, but it is a great balance between Creative and Survival. Commands can be difficult to use if players aren't familiar with them and many of them are complicated and difficult to remember. Here's how to use them.

Commands in Minecraft Pocket Edition

Commands in Minecraft Pocket Edition function the same way as they do on any other platform, whether it's Java or Bedrock. The backslash key "/" is the important one to remember as it will perform commands typed in after it. One thing has to come first, though. Commands aren't naturally turned on in a Minecraft world, so they'll need to be activated first. This can be done in settings.

Either before or after the world is created, it doesn't really matter when, Minecraft players should go to the world settings. This is the first thing that comes up when creating a world, or can be found in the settings on the pause menu.

Scroll down on world settings and find the "Activate cheats" button and turn it on. The game will warn players then that achievements are off and that there's no going back. Proceed, and cheats will now be activated for the world until turned off.

In the world, there's one way to use cheats once they are activated. The chat bar is the only way to use them. Pressing backslash (/) will allow players to use a variety of commands. There are several commands, but some of them are pretty easy to use. The /tp command will allow players to teleport. Simply input the player name and then the coordinates and it will teleport after sending the message into the chat.

The /locate command is another good one. Typing /locate followed by whatever structure needs to be located, like fortress, village, stronghold, ruined portal or buried treasure (which will both be all one word), and the coordinates will come up on screen.
