How much water do I add to the dye bottle?

Most of our Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit bottles have a black fill line close to the shoulder of the bottle. A few of our bottles do not. In that case, fill with water to the shoulder of the bottle, before it narrows in to the pouring tip. This will allow you enough room to shake and dissolve the dye into the water.

Do I need to cover my dyed project while it sets?

Yes it is important to cover your dyed project while it sets so that it doesn't begin to dry. That could affect the colors and cause some staining issues.

How long do I need to let the dyed project set?

Cover dyed fabric with plastic wrap to keep damp. Let set 6-8 hours or longer for most intense colors.

Can I mix dyes to create a new color?

Create new colors by blending dyes. Pour dyes together into one bottle, shake well.

How long can I keep a dye once it has been mixed with water?

Do not add water to dye until you are prepared to apply it. Apply dye within 24 hours after mixing. Dye left unapplied after 24 hours will begin to lose concentration and will result in noticeably weaker color intensity.

What is the best dye for polyester fabric?

Polyester is a difficult fabric to dye, especially if it is 100% polyester. This is because polyester is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum, making it resistant to absorbing dye. Natural fibers like cotton and rayon will absorb dye much better.

Do I need to prewash my fabric before dyeing it?

Yes! For best dye absorption, we recommend prewashing your fabric to remove the sizing added at the factory.

How To Tie Dye

There are so many items you can tie dye! Whether you want to tie dye a T-shirt or something else like tie-dye socks, tie-dye shoes, tie-dye shorts or even tie-dye bedding, the most important thing for a successful tie-dye project is to make sure your item is made from 100% natural fibers like cotton, rayon or silk. Synthetic (manmade) fabrics like polyester have different kinds of fibers and won’t absorb much dye if at all.

Once you have your item to tie dye, you do not have to presoak it in soda ash because Tulip One-Step Dyes already have soda ash in the mix. However, you should prewash your fabric before tie dyeing, especially if it’s new. New fabrics are coated in a chemical called sizing to help keep them wrinkle and stain free, but sizing can block the dye from fully absorbing into the fabric. Wash fabrics without fabric softener, which can also block dye absorption. Leave your T-shirt or fabric item damp for the tie-dye process.
