May I Have Your Attention, Please?

At my first craft show back in 2001 I own a fused glass business, I made up 100’s of necklaces to hang around the craft booth.  What was only made to be an attention getter, quickly became my number one seller.

How to Make Fried Shattered Marble Necklaces

It was my great grandmother that taught me how to make these necklaces.  We used a cast iron pan in her home to create the necklaces.  I just experimented until I achieved the same crackling look by using what I had on hand.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Pie Pan or Muffin Tin
1 Bag Of Marbles (Purchase Here)
Bowl Of Ice Water
Oven
Jewelry Bell Caps (Purchase Here)
E6000 Glue (Purchase Here)
Jewelry Jump Rings (Purchase Here)
Necklace (Purchase Here)
2 Pairs Of Needle Nose Pliers (Purchase Here)

Instructions For Making Marbles:

1.) When you purchase your marbles, purchase can any regular, one color, or cat eye marbles. If you use a two tone color marble the marbles will not get a crackling appearance, instead they will just crack in half. You may also use flat back marbles

2.) In a medium size, metal bowl place 3 cups water and five ice cubes. For each batch of marbles that you fry be sure to replace the ice cubes. The marbles need to go from a fire, hot oven right into freezing, cold water in order to create the crackling effect.

Supplies Purchase on Amazon:

1.) Bell Caps

2.) E600 Glue

E6000 - Strong holding glue will attach metal to glass.

E6000 – Strong holding glue that will attach metal to glass. It isn’t waterproof but it seems to hold for years. I have necklaces that I made from vintage marbles 5 years ago and they are still holding strong. I don’t shower with them of course.

3.) Mini Set of Tools

Mini Jewelry Set

If you are going to be making a good amount of necklaces – get this set. It will make your life easier. The mini pliers versions help you from having to struggle from grabbing too much of the jump rings.

4.) Jump Rings

Jump rings for marble necklaces

The jump ring size is a preference. I like a mid-sized ring. The tiny one are too darn small for my hands, eyes or to get a good grip on for my pliers. The mid sized ones seem to be perfect.

3.) Place marbles in a metal pie pan or muffin tin and place them in a 500 degree oven for 20 minutes to heat them thoroughly. There might be a few that will crack in half while you are heating them up. This is O.K. and perfectly normal.

How to Make Fried Shattered Marble Necklaces

4.) Remove the marbles from the oven after 20 minutes. Pour them directly from the pie pan into the ice cold water. Let them cool for about a minute. When you remove the marbles from the water you may find some have broken, if they do just throw them out. It’s the marbles that are in intact but have a crackling effect inside and out that you are going to use for the next step.

Instructions for Attaching Bell Cap Bails:

5.) Use E6000 glue to glue the bail onto the marble.  Let the bail completely dry before adding the jump ring. See link above to purchase the bails.  I searched far and wide for this vendor, she is the only one that carries them that I have found.

6.) Place the jump ring in your left hand pliers, holding the rings left side with the split side up. Take your pliers in your right hand and gently grasp the right hand side of the jump ring and push backwards to open it.

7.) Slip the bell cap hole in the split ring. Place the necklace inside of the opened split ring to. Be careful that the necklace does not go into the bell cap hole, just the split ring should be in the bell cap.

Then use both sets of pliers, one on the right hand side of split and one on left hand of split to gently rock the ring back and forth, moving it closer to closing the split ring gap.

FRIED MARBLES / CRACKLED GLASS Oven Method

Fried Marbles

Introduction: Fried Marbles

'Fried' marbles have a cracked effect on the inside of the marbles without them actually cracking apart. It's interesting to see the way the glass cracks and the way that light passes through them.

I found out about fried marbles when I was researching marble runs and thought it was a really cool idea. I'm not sure why they're called fried marbles and they're made by baking (less fat haha) but I liked the visual imagery that 'fried marbles' evoked.

I like using fried marbles in my marbles runs but they would make some interesting jewelry too. I plan on dropping some of these into a geocache or two too!

Ready to fry some marbles of your own? Just follow these easy steps:

Set oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Line a baking sheet with some foil and arrange marbles on it.

After your oven has heated, place the baking sheet in the oven and bake.

While waiting for the marbles to heat up, fill a bowl with a few ice cubes and some water.

After about 20 minutes of baking, remove the marbles from the oven and IMMEDIATELY transfer to the bowl of water. I poured mine directly from the baking sheet into the bowl.

Wait a few minutes for the marble to cool then fish them out and admire your very own fried marbles!

Ditto William. We did them in cast iron skillets (have to roll them around to get them to heat evenly). My mom had done so when she was young and taught me and my brothers.

The reason they are called fried marbles is that years ago, back in the late 50 or early 60"s we did cook them in cast iron frying pans before placing them into the ice bath.We also made all kinds of jewelry from necklaces, to earrings, bracelets and pins. It was quite the fad back then. Different types and sizes of marbles produced different results, each unique and beautiful it their own right.

how do you get the color?

the colors are already in them when you buy a bag of regular cheap toy marbles at a store.

Cool idea!!!

That looks really awesome!

Fried Marbles.... LOL

cool I'll have to do this for my next marble run

That's crazy! Do they break easily or are they still pretty strong?

They're still pretty strong. I even cooked some multiple times and they still held up.
Two did actually break but I think it's because I poured them into the bowl and they hit the bottom pretty hard.
It's weird because on the surface you can't see or feel any cracks so my guess is that they're just really thin and only appear on the inside.

lolz they break lolz

Well now that could be a great effect in a jar or some other fun project, thanks for sharing!

Jewelry fried marbles

It is with much sadness that I announce the closing of my storefront. Life is full with having temporary custody of our beautiful 2 1/2 year old grandson, a full time (and then some) job and a traveling for work husband. I have loved every minute of this journey and I have enjoyed the one time customers, the fried marble followers and the many many wonderful conversations about my love for encouraging women not to live their lives like fried marbles...polished and beautiful... on the outside and shattered on the inside.

With that being said, I will be ramping up my website and offering items for purchase through it in addition to participating in art and craft shows, personal shows and open houses (in my home or yours).

I will also continue the ministry side of Fried Marbles. This is actually my favorite part! I love to share with broken and hurting women about how I at times have lived my life like a fried marble and the freedom and peace my faith and my creator has brought me. I believe this is part of his purpose for my life along with donating marble jewelry to local women and organizations who work with them.

Fried Marbles will be hosting a one day farewell sale in honor of you and one of the most fun and blessed years of my life! All items will be half price on Saturday, August 3. Please stop by and keep in touch! I will miss this side of my business and ministry but the Fried Marbles journey isn't over. Who knows, maybe it is just beginning?

God bless you and thank you all for being a blessing to me!

FRIED MARBLES / CRACKLED GLASS Oven Method
FireNFusionis a Wisconsin based glass artisan who has both an Etsy storeand her own website, Dichroic Jewelry and More. She posted a really cool tutorial on her blog how to make a fried marble pendant necklace. Thanks Nikki for updating this link!

The marbles aren't actually fried in oil but baked in a really hot oven and then rapidly cooled in iced water. Some marbles will break apart but you can glue bead caps with wire loops on the survivors to make pendants. This is probably how crackle beads are made.

Now marbles have no holes so here are other ways to incorporate them into jewelry :

1. Don't have a bead cap with a loop?
Not a problem, head on over to Beading Daily for their free tutorial on how to create a wire bail for a marble shown below.

2. If you don't like to use glue, then you could make a wire cage.
Studioheath.com has a great free cage pendant tutorial. (update : link no longer available) The SeaGlassLady also on eHOW shows a more informal style of marble wire wrapping (shown below, link is now dead).

Plaidbunny over at the Sweater Surgery blog also demonstrates a lightly wire netted technique she tried from a book.

3. Want to make something other than a pendant?
Then make the classic double looped wire cage which you can incorporate into bracelets and necklaces. This excellent tutorial by Jinn on Wet Canvas shows you not only how to make the wire cage but also twist wire to form the bracelet below :

The Crafts Channel on Youtube also has a wire cage video tutorial which shows the main steps to make this type of cage. However this video tutorial uses a drilled round bead. The instructor feeds an eye pin through the bead covered with the decorative cage. Parts of the video are difficult to see as the view was often blocked by the instructor's hands. You'll get the picture though.
