Regular Past Tense Verbs

Simple Tense

In this lesson, students will learn how to use the past tense of frequently occurring regular verbs. Students will complete a Quill activity to practice and demonstrate their mastery of this concept. This lesson is most appropriate for third grade students. It is estimated this lesson will take 20 minutes to complete and aligns with Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.1.d This skillbuilding lesson achieves a number of objectives. By the end of this lesson, students will learn that a verb must be changed to match the tense. They will learn how to change a regular verb to the simple past tense and be able to form and use these regular verbs in a sentence. Students will add an ""ed"" to the end of a regular verb when talking about things that happened earlier. Through collaboration, formative and summative assessment, activation of prior knowledge, and metacognitive reflection, students will be able to identify the correct past tense form of a regular verb. Students will rewrite a sentence using the correct form of a regular verb with correct grammar and spelling and receive real-time feedback on their writing skills. With a variety of interactive activities students will remain engaged and teachers will gain a better understanding of a student's level of mastery.

Parts of Speech and Their Functions

The Common Core state standards for 3rd grade grammar set expectations for students knowing parts of speech. Regular and Irregular Plural Nouns

Abstract Nouns

This year, students are learning to expand their thinking into abstract concepts. That includes abstract nouns, such as freedom or emergency. Third grade is a good time to include the word "idea" when describing a noun as a "person, place or thing."

  • choosing whether to use a comparative or superlative (depending on context)

Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions

After learning the basics of conjunctions in 1st grade, students move on to expanding their knowledge in 3rd grade. They should know:

  • subordinating conjunctions (because, since, although, while, and so on)

Using Commas in Addresses

By 3rd grade, students should know how to use commas for different purposes in writing. But the specific 3rd grade skill in this area focuses on using commas when writing addresses. Beyond spelling, 3rd graders need to know how to define both familiar and unfamiliar words. They can do this by:

  • using sentence-level context clues
  • defining a new word after adding an affix
  • identifying a word's root and using it as a clue
  • referring to glossaries or dictionaries

    • Also called “action verbs” 
    • Examples:
      • She sells pillows online.
      • He sweeps the floor with the old broom.
  • MENTAL VERBS
    • Verbs that contain meanings that are related to concepts in the cognitive state

      • She knows all the answers to the questions.
      • He believes that happiness is the key to success.
  • STATE OF BEING VERBS

Types of Verbs

  • DYNAMIC VERBS
    • These verbs are physical actions which are external or can be seen or heard. 
    • They are also called action or event verbs.

      • The guy in blue wrote the letter.
  • STATIVE VERBS
    • The opposite of dynamic verbs. 
    • These verbs describe the subject’s feeling, thought, or state of being.
    • Examples:
      • She hates pineapple on her pizza. 
      • He prefers ballads to pop songs.
  • TRANSITIVE VERBS
    • Verbs that require a direct object to receive an action. 
    • They usually answers the question “what”.
    • Examples:
      • She bought a bag for her mother.
        (In this sentence, bought is the verb while bag is thedirect object.)
      • He dropped his ice cream on his shoe.
        (In this sentence, dropped is the verb while ice cream is the direct object.)
  • AUXILIARY VERBS (HELPING VERBS)
    • Commonly used to change a verb’s tense, mood, or voice. 
    • If there’s an auxiliary verb, a main verb which could represent the main action must also be present. 
    • The most common helping verbs are “be”, “do”, and “have”.
    • Examples:
      • They haveleft the venue early.
        (In this sentence, have is the auxiliary verb while left is the main verb.)
      • Did you wash your hands?
        (In this sentence, did is the auxiliary verb while wash is the main verb.)
  • MODAL VERBS
    • These are types of auxiliary verbs that express a possibility or capability. 
    • “Can”, “could”, “may”, “might”, “must”, “ought to”, “shall”, “should”, “will”, and “would” are examples of modal verbs.
    • Examples:
      • Bin might come over tonight.
        (In this sentence, might is the modal verb while come is the main verb.)
      • Hayi can wash her clothes well.
        (In this sentence, can is the modal verb while wash is the main verb.)
  • PHRASAL VERBS
    • These verbs are phrases composed of two or more individual words that are often combined to create a single meaning.
    • Examples:
      • She called off her birthday party.
        (In this sentence, the phrasal verb is “called off”, a phrase which means ‘cancelled’.)
      • The teacher went over his students’ essay.
        (In this sentence, the phrasal verb is “went over”, a phrase which means ‘to review’.)
  • REGULAR VERBS 
    • A regular verb is a verb whose past tense is formed by adding -d or -ed to the base form of the verb.
    • Examples:
      • look – looked watch – watched
      • love – loved dance – danced
  • IRREGULAR VERBS
    • Usually form the past tense by a change in the spelling of the verb.
    • Examples:
      • eat – ate sit – sat
      • tell – told sleep – slept
