Stormzy admits he ‘bawled his eyes out’ after Glastonbury headline gig suffered technical glitch

Stormzy

Headlining Glastonbury has got to be up there with an artist’s biggest achievements, if not the biggest, but for Stormzy, he felt his big moment on the Pyramid stage was overshadowed by a technical glitch.

The rapper admits, in a new interview with British GQ, he ‘bawled his eyes out’ when he came off stage and opens up about the moment he realised sound issues had meant the festival speakers were delayed for his set.

Gracing the cover of GQ’s March issue, Stormzy gets brutally honest and reveals the first thing he thought after his performance was: ‘You’ve absolutely f*cked that.’

‘I was just bawling my eyes out… I haven’t cried like that since primary school,’ the Vossi Bop hit-maker says. ‘I just broke down.’

Stormzy said he could tell the festival speakers were delayed and if he used those as a prompt, he was going to go off beat.

He decided to listen to the drums instead and perform with ‘muscle memory’, but admitted he couldn’t help but think the whole time he was just slightly off.

‘I know it’s delayed, but I’m thinking just spit, just spit, just spit,’ he said. ‘All that was going through my head was, “Bruv, you have absolutely f*cked it.”

‘I was thinking of all the people who wanted me to f*ck it, “Stormzy? Glasto? That small-timer?” Just watching [me] and thinking, “Look at him, he can’t even spit on beat. He’s all over the place.”‘

No. This breaks our hearts.

Although he’s said the technical issues made his Glasto gig the ‘most difficult thing he has done’, Stormzy still made history to become the first black British solo artist to headline.

And fans still loved every minute of his set, which saw a duet with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Dave and Fredo. They couldn’t get enough of Stormzy, especially because the grime artist chose to perform without a backing track and use live instrumentals and backing singers instead.

‘This man is rapping every lyric with precision and energy in front of 250,000 people,’ one fan tweeted.

Another added: ‘Stormzy is doing A whole #GLASTONBURY set with no backing track guys, do you even understand the levels?’

A third said: ‘Stormzy at glastonbury is the most sensational & beautiful thing i’ve ever watched in my life.’

Pointing out the backlash that surrounded Jay-Z’s gig at the festival in 2008 – some fans felt a rapper should not headline the show – one user commended Stormzy for making history.

They wrote: ‘To think there were people that didn’t want Jay Z to headline Glastonbury… Stormzy is there SHELLING it down doing big bits for the culture. Absolutely ecstatic for the young legend!’

Stormzy headlined on the Friday night of last year’s festival and shared his excitement on Twitter ahead of his set. He wrote: ‘I am the first black British artist to headline Glastonbury

‘At 25 years old I am the second youngest solo act to ever headline Glastonbury, the youngest being a 24-year-old David Bowie in 1971.

‘I’m overwhelmed with emotions, this is the most surreal feeling I’ve ever experienced.’

He said: ‘I feel my entire life has lead to this moment. Can’t explain or fathom what this all is but I am 100% sure this is all God and his favour. Giving him all the glory.’

Elsewhere in his new interview, Stormzy also discusses how he feels about the government and what it’s like for him to represent Black British culture.
