Creating True to Life Materials

You can use the following features to help create true-to-life materials in VStitcher:

 

Using 3D Trim

You can use 3D trim objects to enhance the appearance of a garment and provide a true-to-life simulation. 3D trim objects can be OBJ or FBX files. You can edit 3D trim.

3D trim objects have mass and therefore, if applied after the garment is simulated, require the garment to be simulated again . However, the simulation does not complete unless you click Finish (on the Main toolbar).

Using 2.5D Trim

If 3D trim is not readily available, 2D artwork objects can be made to look 3D in VStitcher. Such objects, known as 2.5D trim, use a combination of artwork and applied physics to create the appearance of a 3D trim.

Using Multilayered Fabrics

You can group textures and artwork to create a multilayered fabric, also known as a fabric group. Using a multilayered fabric helps simulate the appearance of textured fabrics and patterns to create simulated garments that are true-to-life.

Using Material Maps

Material maps are artwork layers that together create the true-to-life appearance and texture of a fabric. A material map consists of the following:

  • Diffuse map

    A diffuse map has a texture and a color. Sometimes referred to as a color map, the diffuse map holds the color and general physical appearance of the fabric. It looks like a photograph of the fabric, as in the following image.

  • Normal map

    A normal map has a texture. Sometimes referred to as a bump map, the normal map holds the texture and depth of the image. The value for this map is changed to adjust the 3D texture of the garment - smooth out or increase bumps. Normal maps are characterized by their blue color with pink highlights, as in the following image.

  • Specular map

    A specular map has a texture and a color. The specular map holds the sheen or luster of the fabric: how shiny the fabric is. Many fabrics have little or no information in their specular map, as they do not have a high level of luster in real life. Specular maps are characterized by their dark color with few highlights, as in the following image.

You can create material maps for use in VStitcher from flatbed scans of fabrics.

When creating maps, It is recommended to create the diffuse map first.

Looking for a way to create details fabric texture(Normal Map)

This is a really amateurish question but I'm completely lost at the movement. I trying to create a cloth with a wooly vest. However, no matter how I tried I cant seem to get the result I wanted. I've manage to sculpt and bake the fold to normal, However, I fail to create the "wool texture/feeling". which lead to this post

How does artist usually create pattern and details such as leather, wool, etc on to the cloth other model?

  • I've try directly sculpting on high poly model (through stencil) however the details is not consistent.

  • I've tried merging two normal map together(the one I've bake which include the fold and a wool normal map from the internet), it a didn't go so well as I've found it is best to bake your own normal then using other. The wool map does "join" correctly as shown on the image enter image description here

  • texture painting heavily rely on the artist skill (which embarrassingly, I'm not at the level on the model) and it is not suitable for the style I'm trying to pursuit. I would like the final to be something like this where at a glance a person could the pattern,texture and the details of the fabric.

Hence, I'm completely lost. Clearly there is way to do it as many have able to create. I just cant seem to figure it out.

The link to my blender file it contain the mesh,3 normal maps and a node setup for merging N1 and N2 , the following are the name of the maps.

N1: the one with fold only(I acquire through baking from high to low poly) it is intended to mix with N2. N2: The normal I found on the internet , intended to mix with N1. If directly use on mesh, it will not "join" together properly refer to the image above. N3: I directly sculpt the "wool texture" on to the high poly and bake it to the low poly, as you can see the details is not very consistent

Maps fabric texture

PBR CG Textures › Fabric › Wrinkled Cloth Texture (Fabric 0004)

This is a wrinkled cloth with a bit of dirt on it. Texture of threads can be found on the surface.

It is a fantastic material for white dresses, pillow case etc.


This is a seamless and tileable PBR CG texture for 3D artists.

Each package usually includes a Base Color Map / Diffuse Map, Normal Map, Roughness Map, Displacement Map, Metallic Map (Metals Only) and Ambient Occlusion Map.

The texture maps are applicable to Blender, Sketchup, Maya, 3D Max, Cinema 4D, Unity, Unreal etc.


Note:
2K and 4K files should suit most of your need. 8K is a large file which will slow down 3D rendering.
SBSAR file is only supported by some game engines and 3D rendering software such as Unity, Unreal, Maya etc.
