Frida Kahlo Mexican Grill closes in downtown Clarendon Hills

Frida Kahlo Mexican Grill, the Mexican restaurant that replaced Aguamiel Restaurante in downtown Clarendon Hills, has closed, less than a year after it opened.

Frida Kahlo Mexican Grill, the Mexican restaurant that replaced Aguamiel Restaurante in downtown Clarendon Hills, has closed, less than a year after it opened.

Building owner John Tilkian said Friday that he decided to let restaurant owners Joaquin Anguiano and Cesar Sanabria out of their one-year lease and now plans to sell the restaurant and building at 30 S. Prospect Ave.

“I’m going to be 79 years old and live 40 miles away, so it’s an 80-mile round trip for me that’s gotten to be too much,” Tilkian said.

Tilkian, who was not involved in the restaurant ownership or operation, said he has owned the building since 2006.

“They showed me their numbers, and it just wasn’t working,” Tilkian said. “I have nothing but good things to say about them. They’re honest, hard-working guys. They are moving their stuff out of there.”

Neither of the restaurant owners could be reached for comment.

Tilkian said he has had a few inquiries of interest in purchasing the restaurant space.

“I am talking to some people, and I’ve been working closely with Dan Ungerleider,” he said, referring to the village’s community development director.

“There isn’t anything definite at this point, but it’s always good to have interest,” Ungerleider said Friday.

Anguiano and Sanabria bought the restaurant from Anguiano’s cousin, Sylvia Xim’enez, who owned Aguamiel Restaurante, which closed Sept. 30, 2018, because Xim’enez decided to retire. They planned to re-open in November 2018 but were delayed about two months.

Aguamiel opened in the summer of 2012, replacing Maijean, a French restaurant, and was named for the sap of the Mexican maguey plant, which is believed to have magical qualities. The Aztecs called it “precious liquid.”

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who lived from 1907 to 1954 and was well-known for her portraits and self-portraits.

We are located in the 5th av, thats the reason why we dont have parking, but is very easy to find a place to park in the street, that is one or two blocks from the restaurant.

  • Entertainment

GASTROMAPPING, it is like imaging projected on the table in a 3d like way while you watch. We have created a show with images from Frida Kahlo’s life and imagery from her art. It is a dinner show for you and part of the experience of this restaurant.

We have designated tables for the show that you can sit at before, during or after your meal at your own table. The show is about 5 minutes.

We had reservations for brunch this morning for a birthday trip, and nobody thought to call/text/email is to let us know the restaurant was permanently closed as of a week ago. I even got an email confirmation from OpenTable yesterday confirming our table for five. Very unthoughtful to international patrons.

Un fiasco, llegamos y el restaurant había cerrado y nadie tuvo la cortesía de avisar, era una cena por un evento en particular y tuve que salir a último momento a conseguir otro lugar.

THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!! 1. If you do the “Frida KAHLO experience “, you will love the museum, but mostly the 6 menu course ! DELICIOUS!!! It is really an experience . 2. If you prefer to go to the restaurant , a must try is the “plátano maduro” small appetizers and the Octopus !! The lobsters ( main plate ) was also mouth watering . 3. Dessert : try the one Frida KAHLO loved , I can’t remember the name, but it was a cheesecake with caramel .... and you got to have it with their coffee . You will not be disappointed visiting this place .

Go to the museum and skip the restaurant. It wasn’t horrible but not worth the money. They are trying too hard to be creative or innovative with the food and the result is a mishmash of flavors that don’t compliment each other. The service was friendly but nothing special. We had read about the gastromapping and were disappointed to find out it is only available with a special reservation not available on open table. The view of 5th Ave is nice.

We were visiting Playa del Carmen and decided to try something different during our stay. We booked “the Experience” which combines a guided tour in the Frida Khalo museum followed by a private 6-course menu paired with drinks, all inspired by the life of Frida Khalo. The service was impeccable and they did an amazing job explaining the food and drinks, tying them to the life and experience of this eccentric woman. The dinner is served in a private room in the restaurant that has projectors shooting videos and images on the four walls around you... truly, the experience!

Authentic Elevated Beautiful Cuisine: We were visiting Playa del Carmen and saw the restaurant in a guide book . Because Frida Kahlo was an authentic Mexican artist we thought these would be authentic yet upgraded dishes and we were right! The table side salsa preparation was delicious and totally different from any we've had ; the sauces yummy and all delicious. Also the tableside view from above the busy street allowed fun people watching including strolling mariachis and other street artists.

I must say that the scene was exceptional, especially when we grabbed three bottles of vodka, a bottle of champagne and a pack of gum and forced him. To carry it all. You should have seen with what a doomed look he left the store. Yes, I forgot to say that the sellers were men, however, and the guard is the same.
