Originally published on the internet web novel website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in November 2012, a year later, it was announced the series would receive a print release under Media Factory's MF Books imprint with illustrations done by a Pixiv user called Shirotaka.[b]

A manga adaptation by Yuka Fujikawa began serialization in the June 2014 issue of Monthly Comic Flapper. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the tankōbon volumes of the manga for localization in North America. The company also has licensed the original light novels. On Syosetu's rankings, the web novel has made cumulative appearances as the most popular work on the website.[2] An anime television series adaptation by Studio Bind premiered in January 2021. A second cour of the same season premiered in October 2021.

An unnamed 34-year-old Japanese NEET is evicted from his home following his parents' death and skipping the funeral. Upon some self-introspection, he concluded his life was ultimately pointless but still intercepts a speeding truck heading towards a group of teenagers in an attempt to do something meaningful for once in his life and manages to pull one of them out of harm's way before dying. Awakening in a baby's body, he realizes his being reincarnated in a world of sword and sorcery and resolves to become successful in his new life, discarding his past identity for his new life as Rudeus Greyrat. Due to inherited affinity and early training, Rudeus becomes highly skilled at magic. During his childhood, he becomes a student of demon magician Roxy Migurdia, a friend to demihuman Sylphiette, and a magic teacher to noble heiress Eris Boreas Greyrat.

As Rudeus finally feels like he has found his place in the world, a major magical catastrophe destroys his nation, teleporting and stranding hundreds of thousands of people far from home - some into dangerous places or situations, resulting in their deaths due to murder, war, execution, monster attack, or exposure to the elements. Stranded practically on the other side of the world in a foreign land, Rudeus resolves to escort Eris home with aid by a befriended strong warrior named Ruijerd Supardia. During his thousands-of-miles-long journey, Rudeus is contacted by a mysterious being, the Human-God, who gives him questionable advice for an unknown agenda. After three years of struggle - including being defeated by a mighty world-class warrior named Orstead - Rudeus successfully escorts Eris home to the remains of his shattered homeland. Unfortunately, political events and a personal misunderstanding with Eris ultimately leave Rudeus heartbroken.

Two years later, the incident with Eris has made Rudeus impotent, so he enrolls in Ronoa Magic University under the Human-God's advice. He is reunited with Sylphiette, who heals his impotence, and the two are wedded shortly after. Rudeus rejoins his father's quest to save his mother, ignoring the Human-God's advice, reuniting and developing a romantic relationship with Roxy during the adventure and taking her as his second wife. He is then visited by a dying future version of himself, warning him that the Human-God will cause the deaths of everyone he cares about. To appease the Human-God, Rudeus feigns an attempt to kill Orsted, one of Human-God's enemies. However, Rudeus offers his allegiance to Orsted in exchange for his family's protection instead. Shortly after, Rudeus takes Eris as his third wife, following a reconciliation for the misunderstanding.

The series continues episodically with a series of story arcs based around Rudeus' work with Orsted to ensure the Human-God's precise demise, as well as his daily life and growing family. Finally, after a large-scale attack on Rudeus' life fails, the Human God gives up on his plans against him, opting to scheme against Rudeus's descendants instead. In the end, Rudeus lives the rest of his life peacefully before his natural death at the age of 74.

Rifujin na Magonote published his work on the online web novel website, Shōsetsuka ni Narō (Shortened to Syosetu); the first chapter was uploaded on November 22, 2012.[3] In November 2013, the author announced his work was to be released as a light novel under Media Factory's MF Books imprint; regardless, the author stated his intentions to continue publishing his chapters online.[4] The illustrator for the light novel is a Pixiv user called SiroTaka.[5]Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the light novels for publication in North America.[6] They made localization changes in their translations of the light novels, such as toning down Rudeus' perverted behavior and removing references to rape. They later decided to "re-evaluate" their localization decisions.[7]

After publishing the first parts of his work, Rifujin wrote that he intended the series to last at least a hundred chapters.[8] Due to criticism towards his work, Rifujin considered ending the series prematurely, but was inspired to continue when his work reached the first place on Syosetu's daily rankings.[8][9] Originally, the story arc where Rudeus' reunites with Aisha was supposed to be completely different from the published work.[10] The author intended to have Lilia die off-screen, and Aisha to be hiding under a different identity. However, he found Lilia's death anticlimactic and decided against it; thus, he had to rewrite the story arc to make sense of her survival and lack of contact. Rifujin stated the story arc might be bizarre due to the changes but expresses no regrets in his decision; he noted Lilia's survival made him reconsider Zenith's condition in the story.[10]

Rifujin intends on creating a sequel to the web novel series that's based in the Six-Sided Universe. On January 15, 2021, the author stated that he plans to finish the Orc Hero web novel first. He also suffers from health problems and plans on spending time healing before starting the new work.[11]

In the May 2014 issue of Monthly Comic Flapper, it was announced that the manga adaptation of Mushoku Tensei by Yuka Fujikawa would premiere in the June issue;[12][13] though Yuka is the author of the manga series, character designs are credited to SiroTaka.[14] Media Works collected the individual chapters into tankōbon volumes; the first volume was released in October 2014.[14] In January 2015, Seven Seas Entertainment announced its licensing of the manga series for localization in North America under the title Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation.[15]

Anime[edit]

On March 15, 2019, the official website of MF Books announced that an anime adaptation project of Mushoku Tensei would be produced.[16] The anime was later announced on October 18, 2019, to be a television series, which is directed by Manabu Okamoto and animated by Studio Bind, with Kazutaka Sugiyama designing the characters, and Yoshiaki Fujisawa composing the music. Egg Firm is credited for production.[17] The series was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020,[18] but it was delayed until January 2021.[19] The first half aired from January 11 to March 22, 2021 on Tokyo MX, KBS, BS11, and SUN.[20][c]

At the conclusion of the first half of the series on March 22, 2021, a second half was announced.[21] The second half was originally set to premiere in July 2021, but was delayed to October 2021, due to "various circumstances."[22] The second half premiered on October 4, 2021.[23][d]

The opening theme song is "The Traveler's Song" (旅人の唄, "Tabibito no Uta"), while the ending theme song is "Only" (オンリー, "Onrī"), both performed by Yuiko Ōhara.[24]Funimation licensed the series and is streaming it on its website in North America, Mexico, Brazil and the British Isles, in Europe through Wakanim, and in Australia and New Zealand through AnimeLab.[25]Muse Communication has licensed the series in Southeast Asia and South Asia and is streaming it on their Muse Asia YouTube channel, and on iQIYI and Bilibili in Southeast Asia.[26]

On February 13, 2021, Funimation announced the series would be receiving an English dub, with the first episode premiering the next day.[27]

Game[edit]

A smartphone game developed by Aiming Co., Ltd. titled Mushoku Tensei ~Game ni Nattemo Honki Dasu~ (Translated: "Mushoku Tensei - I'll Seriously Try Even If It's Made Into a Game") was released on March 27, 2021.[28][29]

Reception[edit]

On Syosetu's rankings, the web novel made cumulative appearances as the most popular work on the website.[2] The light novels have appeared on Oricon's charts and have also ranked on T-site's novel popularity polls.[30][31][32][33] However, the main character Rudeus has been criticized for being overtly perverted.[34]

Controversy[edit]

On February 8, 2021, before the premiere of the fifth episode, the series was suspended from the Chinese streaming network Bilibili due to controversial content described as "immorality" by some critics, most prominently a streamer named LexBurner, who called the anime "for bottom-feeders in the social hierarchy," which led viewers to leave low reviews for the anime on the streaming site. This also led to LexBurner, one of Bilibili's top streamers, being banned from the site.[35][36] Later, author Rifujin na Magonote commented on LexBurner's actions as follows: "His words are only his personal opinion, and he is free to hold whatever views he likes. Although I am displeased at how he has insulted other viewers, anime is not just made for successful people, so I hope that those who can enjoy it will enjoy it.", he further commented: "If that is the kind of online presence he is, that's just the way it is sometimes. Even in Japan, there are plenty of people like him, although they might not have his influence. As far as I am concerned, instead of engaging with him, I think it is more important to ignore him and grow your own communities. Thank you!"[36]

The series has also received user criticism in China for containing perceived misogynistic comments and content.[37]

Reincarnated Individuals are people who were reborn into the world of heroes and they retain their memories of their previous life. They had been reincarnated by a malign deity. They seem to have been used by that deity to destroy information that could aid the Heroes.

Personality

All of the reincarnated individuals have common character traits. They are all prideful, arrogant and self-proclaimed geniuses. All of them think of this world to be games and doesn't bother about life inhabiting the world. They don't really care for the wave and are trying to fulfill their own selfish delusional desires. They mostly refused to listen to other opinions or reasons and only tries for their own satisfaction, Such as, forming a harem, being king, and calling themselves the heroes.

They are overconfident and try to stand out as much as possible while some choose to hide their power. As Naofumi stated, most of them are otaku or gamers in their original world and try to outshine others in this world. They believe in their self-righteousness, as they are chosen by a being called God.

They form an antithesis to the Heroes, as they directly work for the force that is trying to destroy the world and work to sabotage or kill the Heroes at whatever time they can. They cause chaos, confusion and mess things up with their twisted or otherworldly logic. In times of their demise, all of them proclaims that they will return or again reincarnate or demand a redo from someone unknown. They are mostly responsible for the loss of many important information and also the loss of order in the world.

Abilities

These individuals appear to have been granted a special power by the goddess, such as Takt's ability to steal other people's powers or Ciel's ability to create a perfectly unbreachable barrier. But Itsuki claims that these individuals may be the same as him with Esper abilities and that the Goddess chooses the one with suitable Esper for her work. Since they can be recycled after death, Glass' world uses the Soul Eaters to completely destroy their souls after killing them and thus prevents their continued reincarnation.

History

Elrasla Grilaroc of Hengen Musou stated that "Geniuses were the apostles of social growth and decay." One such individual was under the impression that he was the one worthy of ruling the world, and Musou teachings forbid such ways of thought and so he ended Hengen Musou teaching by starting an internal discord. This eventually led to the downfall of the technique and lost in time, except for Granny (who later pass it on to Naofumi's comrades). In the Web Novel, after facing Takt, Naofumi and other heroes come to the conclusion that they were not geniuses but was actually reincarnating people from another world with their knowledge intact from their world.

After his weapons was stolen away, Naofumi was in the Spirit world were the spirit reveal that the one who causes this interference or wave kept on sending enemies (reincarnated individual), no matter how many decades, or centuries. After listening to the story, Naofumi pieces together the information of the Queen, granny, and spirits and concluded that these Reincarnated ones are chosen by the one causing this Waves to act as enforcers in the world(s) that is involved infusing.

Like Hengen Musou, many techniques, technology and other means that give the advantage to fight waves used by the past heroes disappeared in the passage of time. Naofumi predicts that the one behind it used these reincarnating people from another world and control them. To take away the means to fight against the Wave and to make sure these powers would fade away one day. Even if these individual acted on their own ideas and belief, they succeeded in fulfilling what the gods wanted.

Naofumi finds that they succeeded in fulfilling their role as, the way to fight Houou and the Spirit Tortoise, the means to break the Level Cap of 100 and levels beyond, a forgotten way for mass-producing the replica of holy weapons, the destruction of the Hengen Musou School and various pieces of information were conveniently eaten away by the ages. As this information of great values, cannot disappear in a natural way. The uselessness of the information Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki brought to this world all supported his theory. After being able to awake the brainwashing power of the bow by feeding unknown material to his bow, Itsuki himself also felt that his knowledge of the game with convenient information regarding the waves were erased from his memory.

Naofumi also realized that the weapon strengthening method of the past heroes were also destroyed and suspect that important information couldn't be forgotten but deliberately destroyed by someone. Fitoria also told that her master asked her to stop the heroes from fighting each other, as many heroes in the past fought each other instead of joining to fight against the waves, Naofumi suspects that some reincarnated individual instigated these fights. Glass' world was also left with information on what the wave was, but everything else was lost over time.

Naofumi begins to suspect that the one who claims to be the Hero in the past who wielded the brainwashing dagger could also be a Reincarnator, to undermine the hero's faith among the people. As Itsuki's brainwashing curse series was achieved forcefully by feeding an unknown material to the bow by the rebellion faction support this theory. Rishia and Melty also claim that though there was a brainwashing weapon in the past, there was no evidence that it was the shield hero, humans arbitrarily believed it to be the shield hero for their resentment towards him for favoring the Demi-Humans.

Trash also confirms that there were a religion that worshiped a being God other than the hero faith and suddenly it lost its traction, and people begin to shift to hero faith with strong devotion, the reason for which remained unknown. It could be that the people of the past came to realize something and realized that the heroes are the one could save them from the calamity.

Summary

It's been noted that there were rare geniuses who have appeared throughout history in both Melromarc's world and also Glass' World. Naofumi finds these geniuses to be just a Reincarnated Individuals retaining their previous world's knowledge

Naofumi names the one who mediates reincarnations individual as God, based on the novels he read in his world. He clarifies that it claims to be god and not really divine. According to the novel, Naofumi read, If someone were to die in a tragic accident, he would call out to them. To those who faced such misfortune, he would say that you died an unfortunate death, I will give you life once more in another world?. It is nothing but a tempt. Since they're dead, there's no way they can refuse. Even If they decline, god will tempt by words of developed a liking for them, so give them a cheat. In a way forcing them to agree with either way. There's also the possibility of forceful reincarnation without any interaction. Knowing that  God was the one who reincarnated them, they feel special and develop a superiority complex and doing things of their own self-righteousness. If the reincarnated one was a gamer than he sees this as nothing but a game. They are just a playing piece that cuts off the lineage that aids the heroes.

The country of Faubley was completely taken over by one Reincarnator named Takt, who then attempted to take over the entire world and use his power to steal the Legendary Weapons from their rightful wielders. Takt appeared to be under the impression he was actually saving the world, but because of his sheer selfishness, arrogance and stupidity was, in fact, leading directly to its impending destruction. He was defeated by the Heroes, Naofumi, Fohl, Trash, Ren and their comrades, and the weapons he'd stolen found new owners in Raphtalia, Filo, Wyndia, and Green. He was then promptly executed and his soul consumed by a Soul Eater. Trash and Naofumi then set about warning the countries of the world to keep an eye out for anyone who matches the description of a reincarnated individual and keep an eye on them to prevent another danger.

In Glass' world, the situation became much worse due to them not noticing the Reincarnator in time. One Reincarnator tricked several heroes into distrusting their comrades and killing each other. As many as two are known, one of them being Ciel, who believes the world is a game and that by killing his comrades and instead of aiding in the Wave's advance he is letting the game install "Updates". Both Reincarnators are noted to be in control of two large kingdoms. Eventually, Ciel passes through the Wave and enters Melromarc's world, calling it "A new world aided by the Goddess' Update," and tries to force the Wave open to get in. He uses his barrier ability to hold off the heroes who desperately attempt to stop him from his goal. Their shout of wanting to stop the wave and their reason of it being the world fusing together resulting in not even a blade of grass to grow to feel on their deaf ears. The heroes fail, causing the goddess, Medea, to descend upon the world. After Medea promptly kills Motoyasu, Naofumi, and Ren, she sends her army of reincarnated to destroy what remains, allowing them to pillage and assault Melromarc for the sheer fun of it while all of them are still somehow under the impression that it's all a game, despite her openly admitting she intends to destroy the world, with them in it, when she's done.

The Reincarnated Individuals seem to be directly in contact with women like Malty S Melromarc, who are in fact fragments of Medea, the goddess who reincarnated them in the first place.

Known Reincarnated Individuals

Takt Arusahorun Faubrey

A Reincarnated Individual is given the power to steal Legendary Weapons by the Goddess. He acts primarily on the belief that he's saving the world, when he's, in fact, aiding in its destruction. He is Level 350 and has stolen five of the Vassal Weapons by the time he first appears but ultimately, since he's not actually a hero himself, his power is far inferior to the real Heroes once they get their bearings down and he is promptly defeated. Before his execution he demanded a redo to an unknown entity, so he would again reborn in this world to avenge himself, but the heroes just fed him to a Soul Eater to prevent such scenario.

Ciel

A Web Novel only Reincarnated Individual from Glass' world and the only one named amongst them. He is under the impression that he's playing a game and by letting the Waves destroy the world and fuse it with Melromarc's world he is, in fact, letting it "Update" and add new lands for him to conquer and new equipment for him to gain. He has the ability to form a perfectly impregnable barrier for a limited time, but he and his allies cannot attack while under its protection, with the exception of the Scythe Vassal User.

Unnamed Scythe Vassal User

A Web Novel only reincarnated wielding the Vassal Scythe of Glass' world, like all of the others he believes himself to be playing a game. He is woefully weak normally, as without Medea's empowerment he was injured from a hit by Naofumi, the Shield Hero who has next to no attack power compared to the other heroes. He is also extremely arrogant, trying to claim he's smarter than Trash, despite only winning any of their battles by sheer force of numbers and relying on Medea's power whenever they were going to lose. He apparently has a harem and tried to add Melty to it after defeating her army, regardless of her will however he decided to kill her instead when she attacked back. Naofumi, fortunately, prevented this from happening. He appears to be able to attack through Ciel's barrier, meaning he can attack while Ciel defends.

Unnamed Katana Vassal User

A Web Novel only reincarnated individual wielding the Vassal Katana from Glass' world, like all the others he believes himself to be playing a game. He is naturally much weaker than Melromarc's heroes, much like all of his fellow reincarnated, and he would easily be defeated if not for Medea's empowerment. Given his connection to the Katana, he may be Trash#2 or the prototype for that character.

Controlled ones

After Medea descend to the world she reincarnated many to fight the heroes' side, in order to amuse herself by seeing their distress in fighting their loved and trusted ones.

Mirellia Q Melromarc

In order to amuse herself, Medea reincarnated late Mirellia to lead Medea's reincarnated force against the heroes, much to the dismay of Trash who couldn't bear to see it. Medea herself revealed that Mirellia was not acting of her own free will but controlled by Medea. Eventually, Trash found a way to free her soul from the clutches of Medea and she decided to fight Medea along with her family and Heroes, but Trash asked her to leave everything to him, as by exerting every magic may lead her to nothing

Elrasla Grilaroc

She is one of the few to be Reincarnated ones to trick the Heroes side and pretend to fight for them but turn against them when Medea's force have an advantage. She tried to attack trash and Filo when the time was right but was exposed. In the final battle, She was confronted by both Rishia and Eclairs, somehow successfully brought to her senses and she fought along with the heroes against Medea.

Other Rock valley villagers

Many Rock Valley villagers who were killed were reincarnated and send to the heroes in how of creating confusion and strike the hero side when they are off guard. Luckily, Sadeena was able to see through them being controlled and warned the others. Some were even killed by Sadeena herself.

5 Fantasy Webnovels about Reincarnation and Second Chances

Many classic character types populate the fantasy genre. Dashing heroes who defend the common people from an overwhelming evil. Beautiful ladies who marry enemy kings to save their beloved country. Country bumpkins who rise from obscurity to overthrow murderous tyrants. Look around and you’ll eventually find a character archetype to suit your tastes.

But there’s another kind of protagonist found in fantasy webnovels: the character who gets a second chance.

Sometimes, the main character dies and is reincarnated. Other times, they’re left for dead and return many years later to settle the score. No matter the approach, fantasy can give us amazing stories featuring this theme. Interested in exploring this trope? Here are five fantasy webnovels about reincarnation and second chances to get you started.

The Second Coming of Gluttony by Ro Yu-Jin
One for the LitRPG and progression fantasy readers, The Second Coming of Gluttony follows Seol Jihu, a man who starts off a terrible person. There’s no mincing words or softening the truth here. He’s not the best person by any standard. After losing everything to an all-encompassing gambling addiction, he escapes to an alternate reality. Unfortunately, Seol also meets his end there. But before he dies, he wishes for a second chance at life. In a twist on the classic reincarnation trope, his feelings get sent back to his past self in the form of a lucid dream. Now armed with these memories, Seol sets out on a journey of redemption.

The Swordmaster’s Youngest Son by HwangzePenguin
Jin comes from a clan of talented swordmasters. Alas, he didn’t meet their standards, so they betray him and kick him out of their clan. To add insult to injury, he ends up dying a pitiful death. But as so often happens in these reincarnation stories, a god appears before him and gives him another chance at life. With the memories of his past life, the talent granted to him by his family bloodline, and a contract with the God who brought him back, Jin works to become the strongest swordmaster in the world. While the premise may not seem like the most original, the internal politics and relationships within Jin’s clan, as well as that of rival clans, make this a worthwhile read.

The Beginning after the End by TurtleMe
The most popular webnovel on Tapas, The Beginning after the End follows Arthur Leywin. In a previous life, he was King Grey, a supreme fighter in a world governed by martial ability. Things don’t last forever, though. Even the strongest warrior is susceptible to assassination by poison. Now reborn into a new world where magic determines power and status, Arthur seeks to live life to the fullest—starting with keeping close relationships with his family and friends, something he didn’t do in his previous life.

The Regressed Demon Lord is Kind by Hungry Panda
Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. A warrior becomes so strong he earns the moniker, The Demon Lord of Strength. He terrorizes the countryside so badly that a group of heroes come after him. He’s defeated and as he lays dying, the leader of the heroes tells him that he should be kinder in his next life. And of course, he gets another chance at life with all his memories intact. But the question here is this: what does kindness look like in the hands of a Demon Lord? Probably not what you’d expect by normal standards. This fantasy webnovel about reincarnation features subversion and twists on the standard tropes, as well as a very clever protagonist, so don’t assume the story is as straightforward as it appears.

The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero by San-G
While this isn’t a reincarnation novel in the traditional sense, it is about second chances. Here, the protagonist was egregiously betrayed and left for dead. To make matters worse, people manipulated his apparent death for their purposes. If you love revenge stories, The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero is for you. In a genre where protagonists do die and reincarnate into another life, it’s a refreshing change of pace for the protagonist to survive and bide his time. Ironic, isn’t it? The Count of Monte Cristo was one of the earliest examples of a serialized novel, and it built a gripping plot on this very concept. This one also doesn’t have the traditional fantasy setting. Instead, it takes place on a post-apocalyptic earth where people have fantastical abilities. Worth a read for fans of interesting magic and combat systems.

See what I mean? Even though the idea of fantasy webnovels about reincarnation and second chances may seem like a limited concept, a lot can be done with it. Transmigration to another world, age regression, and messages sent to the past by a future self—they’re all variations on the same theme, but each result in different executions and stories. Give one of these titles a try if you’re looking for a quick and entertaining read.
