Sermin Kardestuncer‘s work has always included traces of her ancestors and her environment. The daughter of a Turkish tailor, she has often incorporated thread and stitching in her works on paper, cloth, even sheetrock, wood, metal, and concrete. During the 1990s, while living and working on a remote Greek island, she ran out of paint and discovered that the reddish earth around her worked equally well as pigment. This began a series using earth from the countries that she visited or lived in (Greece, Turkey, Italy). Her abstractions initially recall the work of minimalist artists of the 1960’s and ‘70’s, but upon closer inspection her integration of seductively worked materials produces nuanced compositions, and via the organic nature of her hand-work she creates her own vernacular.

“301 Balls (Diptych)” includes 301 small balls made of cotton thread unraveled from fabrics and studded with coal from Soma, Turkey, as an homage to the 301 miners who died there in 2014. Kardestuncer visited Soma on the one-year anniversary of this tragedy and after seeing the grieving families decided to make this work. “The ancient Greeks believed columns represented people…” and so “…each ball represents a person who died.”

Sermin Kardestuncer - "Live Life (dedicated to Baba)," 2008–2019, Socks, cotton filling, thread, a framed B & W photograph on fabric, 18 X 24 X 2 inches “I wrote an homage to my father and his summer home in Ayvalik, Turkey after he died in 2015. The B & W photo used in this work, ‘Live Life,’ is taken in front of this home. ‘Hayati yasa,’ (‘Live life’ in Turkish) he said, when I rushed to visit him at his bedside a few months before he died and when he was loosing all cognitive abilities. Since then, I search for the hidden meaning or a message to ‘Live Life.’ By stitching the words on soft fabric that hangs from each side of the photograph like gentle gloves, I try to gain courage to live up to his wishes.“

Masking Up Buffalo-Style at Buffalo Seamery

We all show our love for Buffalo in different ways. Some of you may adorn your home or office with Buffalo artwork. Some of you may literally wear Buffalo on your sleeve. And, hopefully, all of you show your love by opening up your wallet and supporting local businesses whenever you can.

If you fit into any of those Buffalovin’ categories, you’re going to love Buffalo Seamery. Because if you love Buffalo, you probably love your Buffalo neighbor and if you love your Buffalo neighbor, you’re probably wearing a mask whenever you venture out. And now you can show your civic pride (and show you care!) by wearing Buffalo-themed masks made by local maker, Liz Brodfuehrer, and sold at her Buffalo Seamery retail shop (299 Parkside Ave.), and online.

Buffalo Seamery’s line of masks includes, among others: standing buffaloes, butter lambs, pierogis and Buffalo City Hall. There are 13 different fabric choices sure to make you smile (although we’ll have to take your word for it).

“Every mask, pair of socks or, honestly, any item I make is imaginative, fun and meant to bring a smile to your face,” said Brodfuehrer. It brings a smile to hers as well. “The feeling of making a design, seeing it printed on fabric, and then cutting and sewing it yourself is such a fulfilling feeling, especially when I spot one of my items in the wild.”

Buffalo Seamery owner, Liz Brodfuehrer / photo by Bossy Photography

Her passion for sewing took off after college when she found a light blue, vintage sewing machine at an estate sale. Self-taught, she spent many hours playing around with patterns and dabbling in sewing. When she was pregnant with her first child, she would sew baby accessories that she couldn’t find locally – hats, bow ties, etc. Once she discovered that there was a market for her items, she launched her Etsy shop and website, www.buffaloseamery.com.

After a year in business, she decided that a shift in focus to Buffalo-themed items was the way to go and so came baby clothes, socks, leggings and headbands all sporting her own custom standing buffalo design. Given her family’s Polish background, she even started designing her own custom fabrics to reflect her heritage.

“I like to bring the unique Buffalo-isms to light in my fabric,” she said. “My butter lamb design has been extremely popular. Same with the pierogi fabric. I even met with Sahlen’s to explore the possibility of Sahlen’s socks.”

Then March 2020 happened.

St. Patrick’s Day and Dyngus Day are typically her best-selling days of the year, so when the pandemic hit at the same time, it was a huge blow to her bottom line. Within weeks she was producing and donating masks to healthcare workers as fast as she could make them. Shortly after that, she started selling them to the general public. Since she stocked so many Buffalo fabrics, it was an easy transition into mask-making. Her colorful, fun masks are reasonably priced between $10-$12 and most importantly, they’re comfortable.

“My straps are super stretchy and soft and give the wearer a few options to make the mask fit comfortably and fit in the safest way possible,” Brodfuehrer added.

Buffalonians have shown her incredible support.

“Buying local is everything right now,” she said. “It really can make or break someone’s business. Those few purchases that you think may not be a big deal could make someone’s rent and give them another month to try to pull ahead.”

If you’re reading this blog from afar, Buffalo Seamery ships all over the world when you make a purchase online at buffaloseamery.com. But if you’re in this neck of the woods, please consider stopping into their Parkside shop. Buy local and mask up, Buffalo!

BASIC PIEROGI DOUGH―SAVORY AND SWEET

Makes enough dough for 24

THIS RECIPE IS THE TEMPLATE for every pierogi you’ll make in this book, and it’s a wonderfully forgiving dough for beginning bakers. There’s no finicky yeast to deal with and thus no rising time, just a brief resting period so the flour can become supple and smooth. If you don’t measure your ingredients by weight, it’s important to use the spoon-and-sweep method instead of dipping a measuring cup directly into the flour. When you scoop with a measuring cup, the flour is compacted into the cup, adding up to 1 extra ounce of weight (1 ⁄ 4 cup of volume) to each cupful. That translates to too much flour in the dough and tough, chewy pierogies. So either grab a kitchen scale and make life easier, or lightly fluff the flour with a spoon, then use the spoon to fill the measuring cup, leveling excess flour off with a knife.

2 large eggs

1 ⁄ 2 cup (4 ounces, 113 grams) sour cream or plain Greek yogurt (full-fat, reduced-fat, or nonfat)

3 tablespoons (1 1 ⁄ 2 ounces, 43 grams) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

For savory pierogies: 1 teaspoon kosher salt

For sweet pierogies: 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 ⁄ 4 teaspoon kosher salt

2 cups (8 1 ⁄ 2 ounces, 240 grams) unbleached all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon water

Whisk 1 egg, sour cream or yogurt, butter, and salt (for savory pierogies) or sugar and salt (for sweet pierogies) in a bowl. Add flour to a large bowl. Gently stir wet ingredients into flour. Thedough will initially be very dry and shaggy, seeming as if it will never come together, but have no fear: Keep stirring, and it will pull itself into shape.

Once the dough starts to come together, press and smash it against the sides of the bowl with your palms, picking up dough bits and essentially kneading it within the bowl until it forms a ball.

Tip dough and any remaining shaggy flakes out onto a clean work surface or Roul’Pat. Knead until smooth, about 1 minute. Cover dough with the bowl and let rest 15 minutes. Whisk remaining egg and water in a small bowl for egg wash.
