I WOULD BEG HP IF HP COULD JUST CREDIT PARTIALLY THE 2 SO I COULD INVEST IN A BETTER ONE, OR CHROMEBOOK. I AM SINGLE MOTHER, AND CANNOT AFFORD TO LOOSE THIS WAY & JUST THROW THESE DEVICES OUT .. I HAVE TO GO TO THE LIBRARY TO DO ANY WORK. THESE LAPTOPS ARE NOT USEABLE, AGAIN. THEY JUST STAY FROZEN AND DONT MOVE.

Every Windows 10 update requires a certain amount of storage space on your device to help ensure the installation goes smoothly and that it runs well.

Before downloading the update, Windows runs a scan to make sure there’s enough space. If there isn’t, you’ll see a message asking you to free up some.
External or internal?
If your device doesn’t have enough space for the update, Windows will ask you to connect an external drive to extend the space on your hard drive temporarily while the update is being installed. Or, you can free up space on your device by deleting nonessential files if you don’t have an external storage device or don’t want to use one.

The More space needed for update window only shows one option at a time for freeing up space, but you can select either I want to use external storage instead or I don’t have an external storage at the lower-left side of the window.
Updating with external storage
If your device has less than 50 GB total capacity on its hard drive, updating is easiest using an external storage device.

Step 1: Free up space

Although you’re using an external storage device, your hard drive still requires space to install the update. Here’s how to make some:

In More space needed for update, select Free up space.

Clear space with an external storage device.
This opens Storage in Settings, which shows how much space is available on your device. Select your C: drive to see what’s using the most space and to clear it by deleting nonessential files. (For tips, see Free up drive space in Windows 10).
Return to More space needed for update and select the refresh icon next to the Free up space button. If you deleted enough files, a green check mark will appear next to the hard drive Internal hard drive icon icon.
Step 2: Connect an external storage device

Connect your external storage device and wait until you see it in the drop-down list under Step 2 (you might need to select the refresh icon). If the external storage device has enough free space, a green check mark will appear next to the storage drive icon.
Select Continue to finish installing the update.
Updating with your hard drive
If you don’t want to use an external storage device, you’ll need to free up more space on your hard drive.

In More space needed for update, select Free up space.

Clear space from your hard drive
This opens Storage under Settings, which shows how much space is available on your device. Select your C: drive to see what’s using the most space and to delete nonessential files. (For tips, see Free up drive space in Windows 10.)
Return to More space needed for update and select the refresh icon next to the Free up space button. If you deleted enough files, a green check mark will appear next to the hard drive Internal hard drive icon icon.
Select Continue to finish installing the update.

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems, but I'm here to help.

If you have a pair of USB drives available, you can follow this guide to install updates when you don't have sufficient space:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-any-...

Please let me know if that solves the problem. If not, there are plenty of other things we can try!

Thanks for getting back to me!

It never gives me the option of adding external storage.

Sometimes the window appears on the laptop telling me it needs to update and sometimes I can open the window by clicking on the windows 10 update assistant.

When I go this I have to click do you want this app to make changes to your device?  yes/no

At this point is says file origin: hard drive on this computer.  There isn't a drop down menu to select external storage.

When I click yes it goes to update to latest version of windows 10, I click update now.

It briefly says chocking device compatability and then says windows 10 will work on this oc but required attention before it can update

CPU: ok

Memory: ok

Disk space: you'll need to create space

When I click create space now I can't find anything that adds up to 4GB for me to delete and there still isn't an option to use external storage?

Any ideas?

Hi Lucy Blue, you would be amazed how many users with HP Streams every day ask the exact same question . . .

It does not matter is you can download the update onto a USB drive, you still need the space to install the update onto your internal storage - those fixes with external storage do not work, sorry!

Honestly, there is only one answer - backup your data and perform a clean install of Windows 10 - I know this is not the answer you are looking for, but it is the only and best Answer. You will then have enough space for the next 2 years of Windows 10 updates and your system will be faster . ..

Any device with a 32 GB SSD is not good enough to run Windows 10, regardless of the system specs put out by Microsoft.

I honestly don't know why the manufacturers produced these devices.

The Windows 10 folder with a couple of updates will very quickly eat up 20 - 25GB of your hard drive, mine is currently 23GB

You can reinstall Windows 10 at any time and it will not cost you anything !

Since you previously had Windows 10 installed and activated on that PC during the installation process skip the steps which ask for a product key and select the option 'I am Reinstalling Windows 10 on this PC', and activation will not be an issue, your PC will have a digital entitlement stored on the Microsoft Activation Servers

Make sure you install the same Edition of Windows 10 (Home, Pro . . . etc.) you previously had installed to avoid Activation issues

Click this link:

to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), you can create a bootable USB flash drive (min 8GB) using that tool

Then, Boot your PC from the Installation Media you just created (change Boot Order in your BIOS) to begin installing Windows 10

If you have problems booting from a boot disc, you may have UEFI BIOS:
Insert the Bootable Installation Media, then go into your BIOS and make the following changes:
1. Disable Secure Boot
2. Enable Legacy Boot
3. If Available enable CSM
4. If Required enable USB Boot
5. Move the device with the bootable disc to the top of the boot order
6. Save BIOS changes, restart your System and it should boot from the Installation Media

Try running Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup within cmd prompt/powershell with admin to make further cleanup.
You can download the media creation tool then the prompt should appear to insert a further usb drive for the update to complete.

Can I add more memory to my HP Stream 11-r010nr notebook?

The SSD is soldered as it is eMMC. The RAM is also soldered and most of these only include 2GB of RAM. You can get 4GB, but only on the Stream 13 - which is more expensive.

The problem with these systems is it’s part of the Windows 8.1 with Bing licensing requirements - you can’t have more then 32GB of storage and 4GB of RAM - most only use 2GB of RAM to be safe with Microsoft. Technically any type of storage will work as long as the storage requirements are met. However, eMMC is popular due to cost since these are disposable devices despite OEMs being able to use a M.2 SSD (these would only take SATA M.2 drives due to the chipset, but you could use a 2242 drive like they do in some enterprise Chromebooks). Part of the problem is these were meant to compete with Chromebooks, which is why they impose such requirements, but also to sell cloud storage. The Win10 Cloudbooks compete against the same market, but with better specs.

These 8.1 with Bing notebooks remind me of the Office 2010 Starter deal that only came with low end PCs (think Celeron, with barely any RAM), which was a direct attempt to sell Office licenses to remove the restrictions. We all everybody was good and didn’t pirate the leaked Techspot installer and bought it legally like you’re supposed to. Right? Right? I hope not. /s

Due to the unique Microsoft imposed RAM and SSD caps, they’re not upgrade friendly, and are basically disposable eWaste. However, the 2GB limit HP stuck to on these was due to cost reduction AND the Microsoft requirements, since they were speccing these out with caution to avoid running afoul of the original specification limits. These 8.1 with Bing systems are dead end.
Now I will give Microsoft credit here as much as this is a beatdown of how they directly generated millions of pounds of eWaste, but the original requirements are good for nothing but making eWaste, and allowed the OEMs to use 64GB before S Mode - which can be removed for free. Now the eWaste issue is on the OEMs, as many dump S Mode on low end laptops which are barely usable.
