What is the difference between hydrogen peroxide and Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide®?

Rescue™ is based on our patented technology called Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide®, or AHP®. The only active ingredient in AHP® is hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide, which you purchase at a local drugstore, is 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and 97% water making it very unstable and extremely easy to inactivate, which makes it unsuitable for use as a disinfectant on hard non porous surfaces. To resolve this, a team of scientists took Hydrogen Peroxide and created a special formulation by adding chelating agents to help stabilize the hydrogen peroxide. This in turn allows it to accelerate the time it takes to disinfect a surface and remain active, for the length of time required to disinfect. This new highly effective Hydrogen Peroxide based technology is now called Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide® (AHP®).  

Additionally, AHP® contains surfactants (detergents) that allow Rescue™ to work effectively as a cleaner as well as a disinfectant, and wetting agents, that reduce the surface tension of a liquid and allow it to spread across or penetrate the surface of a solid more easily.

Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP) – the future of disinfection

Contamination of environmental surfaces has been linked with transmission of healthcare acquired infections (HAIs). Products used to clean and disinfect the environment are designed to kill. Yet paradoxically, they must be safe to use. The ultimate goal of cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces is to create a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

In the modern era of Infection Prevention and Management of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) there are multitudes of disinfectant choices available for facilities to deliver a hygienic environment to ensure optimal patient outcome.

To make an informed decision Rutala and Weber (2014) state that the selection of the ideal disinfectant comes down to five key criteria:

  1. Kill claims for the most prevalent healthcare pathogens
  2. Fast kill time and acceptable wet contact time. Contact time should be greater than the time it takes to kill a pathogen. If a product evaporates before the kill time is reached, then a contaminated surface may not be disinfected
  3. Safety of the product should be assessed such as its non-toxicity, non-irritant classification. The product should not cause any harm to users, patients, surfaces and equipment
  4. Ease of Use. Considering that the most effective disinfection is done at the point of care, the disinfectant must be easy to use by cleaners and Nursing staff
  5. Supplier Support such as education. The cost of infection should form part of a facility’s calculation when evaluating the choice of a disinfectant

Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide, or AHP, is the breakthrough advancement in infection prevention for the healthcare environment. AHP is a patented formula containing hydrogen peroxide that has been accelerated to dramatically increase its germicidal potency and enhance cleaning performance.

Hydrogen Peroxide purchased from a Drug Store is a 3% diluted solution (3% hydrogen peroxide, 97% water). Hydrogen Peroxide in this form is known to be very unstable with a relatively short shelf life. For years scientists have worked to find a way to include other ingredients in this water and hydrogen peroxide solution in order to increase stability and create a viable and effective product.

These chemistries we have trusted for decades to disinfect are considered ‘legacy’ disinfectants; however, though some of these have been proven to be effective at killing pathogens, they often carry a toll on users, surfaces, and the environment.   • Quaternary Ammonia compounds are introduced; however, they became known to accumulate in the environment, have broad spectrum disinfection challenges, and have long disinfection contact times (the amount of time a disinfectant needs contact with a given surface to kill all pathogens found there).
