How to Enter the Service Mode on a Canon Copier

Entering service mode on a Canon copier allows you to alter several different copier settings, including the ambient temperature setting and the relative humidity settings. These settings allow you to adjust the copier to your environment, instead of having to adjust your room temperature or humidity to increase the reliability of the Canon copier. Entering the service mode takes a few steps and is consistent across most models.

Press the "*" button; immediately press the "2" and "8" buttons simultaneously. Pressing this series of buttons too slowly will not gain you entry into service mode.

Press the "*" button, then release. The Canon copier will indicate that you are in the service mode.

Navigate the menus to change the copier's settings. Service mode lets you troubleshoot an error code, increase the fusing temperature and access error logs.

Mode canon service

After some digging, I now know how to enter Service Mode on a Canon MF426dw, and wanted to share with the community. This will certainly work on other MFPs in the 420 series, and possibly models in other series.

Refer to the following image of the control panel which shows that there are two hidden keys located in the blank spaces located between the "Energy Saver" and the "Home" keys, and between the "Home" and the "Stop" keys, "SP1" and "SP2", respectively.

To enter service mode via the control panel:

1. Press the “Home” key;

2. Press the unmarked "SP1" key;

3. Press the unmarked "SP2" key;

4. Press the "Volume" button on the left edge;

5. Press the "Stop" key;

6. The Service Mode screen is displayed.

To enable Remote UI Service Mode:

1. Enter Service Mode on the Control Panel, using the above steps;

2. COPIER > OPTION > BODY > RMT-SW;

3. Change the value to "1";

4. Remote Service Mode is now enabled.

To access (the now enabled) Remote UI Service Mode:

1. Browse to http://<ipaddress-or-hostname>/servicemode.html

2. Password is "*28*YYYYMMDD".

...where "YYYY", "MM", and "DD" are the 4-digit _current_ year, the 2-digit _current_ month and the 2-digit _current_ day, respectively.

The service manual states: "Password of service mode can be changed in COPIER > OPTION > BODY > SM-PSWD."

... but what appears on the control panel (and via the remote service mode) is "11,111,111", which can be changed, but I don't know what this really indicates, or how that maps to the password above. I've left mine at the default of "11,111,111", and the password above works.
