How to Find the Best Discord Servers Worth Joining

Discord started as a voice chat program for gamers. However, it has since grown to become a popular platform for hosting text-based forum communities as well. There are Discord servers for all sorts of interests, including games, movies, music, and more. To find these great Discord communities, all you have to do is look.

But it's not always easy to know where to begin your search. Additionally, if you're new to Discord, you might also be confused about where to start. That's why we've put together a few ways to find some of the best Discord servers.

How to Find Discord Communities Using the Discord Server Directory

Whether you're using the Discord desktop app or the Discord app on your phone, you can find servers by taking a peek at the menu to the left. Click on the compass icon to open the official public Discord server directory.

The homepage of this directory shows you some of the most popular Discord servers, like the Official Fortnite server, Genshin Impact server, and the Official Minecraft server. These servers have hundreds of thousands of members and are among the largest servers on Discord. You can join any of these or check out any of the other categories in the left menu.

To browse Discord servers with a more specific group of interests, use the search bar.

If anything stands out for you, you can click to read about the server before you join.

How to Find Discord Servers Using the Disboard Website

Another way to find the best Discord servers is to use the Disboard.org website. Disboard has aggregated a list of Discord servers for all types of topics, including many gaming communities and anime and manga fan bases. It also lists Discord servers for topics like music, technology, movies, memes, and role-playing.

To find a Discord server, scroll down and browse the Disboard directory using Categories and Popular Tags on the main page. Categories are listed in pale blue, and popular tags are listed in green. Click on a topic to bring up a list of Discord servers related to that topic.

Once you click a topic, you'll see more information about each listed server, like its name, a starred user-review rating, a description of the server, and how many people are currently online. You'll also see a flag to indicate the language of the server and an NSFW icon if the server is for adults only.

You can also add a term to the search bar to search for servers related to that topic. Or, to browse user reviews of communities, click on Reviews at the top to see ratings for individual Discord servers. Then, when you find a server you like, click to join.

How to Join Servers on Discord Using the DiscordMe Website

Another reputable Discord server finder is Discord.me. This site leans slightly more toward anime-themed communities, but there are also plenty of listings for gaming, entertainment, and social categories.

To find a Discord server, you can browse the most popular from the home page, or you can use the Categories drop-down to search by category. Click on a category name to be taken to a list of the top Discord servers in that category.

For those who want to know how to join random Discord servers using this site, the Random option in the left-hand menu will take you to a random Discord server from the directory. This feature is outstanding for finding Discord servers that you would never think to visit or join otherwise.

Once you've clicked on a server name, you'll see information about its contents and a banner image. Next, click on Join Server to be taken to the Discord invite page. You can use this page to access the server.

How to Find Discord Servers Dedicated to Your Favorite Influencers

Another option for finding Discord servers is to look for servers run by your favorite websites or tech influencers.

For example, the popular technology forum Linus Tech Tips has its own Discord Server with information about hardware, gaming, and more. Other sites have exclusive communities for particular groups, such as Patreon supporters.

Many Twitch streamers also have Discord servers as well. Looking for these can be a fun way of finding servers full of other people who are into the same games as you. Additionally, looking around the sites you visit regularly might be one way to find Discord communities relevant to a specific fandom.

How to Find Private Discord Servers

In addition to public Discord servers, there are also private Discord servers that require an invitation. You can often find invites to private servers on Twitter, Facebook, Steam, and other social media sites.

These servers typically have between 50 and 500 users, so they're much smaller than big public Discord channels. That also means that they're less active, but they can offer a tighter-knit community. If you find larger servers impersonal or filled with drama, a smaller private server might be preferable.

If you're focused on finding a Discord server for gamers, Reddit is also an excellent place to search. Additionally, a link like http://discord.gg/GlobalOffensive will take you to a community's landing page. (In this case, the link points to the Counterstrike: Global Offensive community). Click on Accept Invite to join the server.

Once you've joined a Discord server, browse through the rules and guidelines. Some private servers will ask you to message a mod or confirm you have read the rules before accessing additional server channels.

Find Great Discord Servers the Old-Fashioned Way

The best place to find Discord servers isn't always the Discord website itself; the Discord server-finders above are living proof of this. There are servers out there for almost any topic of interest that you can think of. And you can use any of these methods to figure out how to look for a Discord server that suits you. Where you find Discord servers that suit your tastes will ultimately come down to which method meets your personal preference.

Those searching for new communities will be glad to hear that Discord grows larger and more diverse every day. By using these methods, you can find your internet tribe and participate in conversations that you are passionate about.

The Friends List feature in Discord is the perfect solution to socializing while gaming. Call up a few of your closest gamer contacts and connect from anywhere to enjoy your favorite games together.

How To Find your Friends on Discord

Discord has several chats and audio options including screen share and video calling. The possibilities are endless. Linking up with other gamers or friends is simple if you follow a few steps.

Discord does you the service of providing a feature that allows you to list not only your favorite team, but it also lets you communicate with anyone else who happens to be using the platform. If you’d like to send a DM to a person who is not on your friend’s list in Discord check out this article.

This mass communication software means that you won’t have to remember every person’s username when trying to make a connection. In this article, I’ll go over the different ways in which to add friends, both new and old, to your Discord Friends List.

How To Add Friends In Discord

There are a few different ways in which to add friends to your Friends List. You can search for them using their username and gamer tag if you know it. There is also the ability to add a friend through their profile as well as by using a right-click menu. In this article, we’re going to break down each of them as well as what you can find using the Friends List Window.

Discord Friends List Window

Having friends added to the Friends List means you won’t have to share a server to send DM’s, create group chats, or check their online status. You’ll have direct access to each of these things right there in the Friends Window.

To get to your Friends List Window:

  1. While logged into Discord, click the Discord icon at the top-left of the screen (this should be listed above the list of servers you’re involved in.
  2. From the Discord Menu, click on the Friends icon located to the right of your servers list.

When you have friends already added, you can sort them all through the Friends List Window. There are a few tabs to swap between depending on how you want the list displayed:

  • ALL – This tab will display every one of your friends currently added to your list.
  • ONLINE – This shows you each and every one of your friends from the list that are currently online, including those who may be idle.
  • PENDING – All friend requests that you’ve received will be sitting here. You can scroll through and accept or reject until your heart’s content.
  • BLOCKED – Every user you’ve blocked will be listed here.

Technically, only those you’re willing to call ‘friend’ will be found in the “Online” or “All” tabs. While looking at the lists, information is broken down into three columns:

  • NAME – The friend’s username (not to be confused with their full tag).
  • STATUS – You’ll find their online status and the game they’re currently playing in this column.
  • MUTUAL SERVERS – If you share a server with any of your friends, the server name will appear here. Your window may need to be expanded if the mutual servers are not showing up.

You can open up a DM with one of your friends by clicking on the horizontal bar that appears while hovering above one of them. Also, if you share a server, you can click the server name to be taken directly to that server’s #general channel.

So let’s get back to that relevant button mentioned earlier – Add Friend.

Add Friend Via Username & Tag

You can add some gamer buddies directly from your Friends List Window, by clicking on the Add Friend button. After clicking on the button, a new window appears:

There are a couple of different things to take away from this window but for now, we’ll focus on the text box. If you happen to know the DiscordTag of the friend you’d like to add, you can type it into the box and hit Send Friend Request.

A DiscordTag requires you to have the friend’s full username (case-sensitive), followed by a series of #s, finished with their 4-digit DiscordTag. All of this information can be obtained from either the friend providing it to you or pulling it up from their profile. You can also left-click their avatar if you have it readily available to you.

By typing this completely inside the text box, you’ll receive either a green-colored message:

indicating the request was a success or a red-colored message:

that tells you that something was wrong. If you experience the red message, be sure to double-check that all information typed in is correct and give it a go once more.

If you’d like to connect a few of your other social media accounts to your Discord, you can do so by smashing the Connect Accounts button located at the bottom of the window. You’ll need to log in and provide authorization to each of the social media platforms you want to connect. Doing this will populate friends in the “Friends Suggestion” section so long as they too have a Discord account.

Add Friend Via Profile Button

If you chose to locate the friend’s DiscordTag by visiting their profile, you may have caught a glimpse of a pretty, green Send Friend Request button like this:

Unsure of how to get back to a user’s profile?

There are a couple of ways to add friends in Discord. You can either:

  1. Left-click a future friend’s avatar and then left-click the avatar again inside the new window.

    OR
  2. Right-click the potential friend’s name or avatar and select Profile from the menu.

Add Friend Via Right-Click Menu

This alternative to adding a friend is likely the simplest. No need for a strong memory or searching through profiles. All you need to do to shoot out a friend request is to right-click the soon-to-be hombre’s name and select Add Friend from the menu.

Super quick, super sweet! Following these steps will net you your own gamer crew in no time.

Friending Mutual Acquaintances in Group Chats

Assuming you’ve connected with someone via chat and would like to send a friend request to the individual in your messages there are a few things you can do. As stated above; you’ll need the 4-digit code that accompanies the username. This may not appear readily available.

From the group chat, you can click on the profile picture of the sender you’d like to link up with. Their full username will appear in the chatbox; four-digit code included. Once you’ve gathered this information you can follow the above-listed steps to send the friend request.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have the username right but get an error. What’s going on?

When you send a friend request in Discord you will need the users’ four-digit identifier. This identifier is typed “#0000” and if not inputted correctly, you will not be able to friend the other user.

Another thing to check is that you’re using proper punctuation. If there are any capital letters or special characters, be sure to include them.

How can I meet new friends on Discord?

The best way to meet other users is to join Discord servers. There are several options and surely you will find many that peak your interests. To find public servers click on the compass icon underneath the list of servers you’re already in.

You can either scroll through the list of servers or use the search bar to find a server that you’re interested in. You can search for your favorite games and even other content.

How To Find Discord Servers

This article covers how to find Discord servers using the Discord app, online directories, and other resources and how to sort out the best Discord servers from the ones that you should avoid.

How to Use the Discord Server Search

Discord servers are essentially advanced online discussion forums with extra functionality like voice chat, system notifications, and app support on both computers and smart devices. There are hundreds of millions of Discord servers to join on almost every topic imaginable, from Discord dating servers to servers dedicated to gaming and anime series.

The easiest way to find public Discord servers is to use the built-in server search on the Discord desktop app.

  1. Open the Discord app on your computer.

  2. Click the Explore Public Servers icon that looks like a compass.

  3. You will land on the official Discord server directory's front page with a search bar at the top and several popular Discord servers underneath, such as those dedicated to the Fortnite video game and Minecraft. Click any of these to see what their community is like and how active they are.

  4. If you like a Discord server, all you need to do to join is to click on the Join button at the top of the screen. You can also click the compass icon again to return to the main directory.

  5. In addition to the featured popular servers, you can also discover other Discord servers to join by navigating via the categories on the left menu. The categories available are Gaming, Music, Education, Science & Tech, and Entertainment.

  6. Another way to find Discord servers is to use the search bar. It can be helpful if you’re not sure which category your preferred topic fits in or if it relates to more than one category.

One example of such a topic would be Star Wars which has Discord servers dedicated to Star Wars video games such as Star Wars Battlefront II and The Old Republic. There are also servers forits movies and Disney Plus series like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Rangers of the New Republic.

Online Directories for Popular Discord Servers

One alternative method for finding Discord servers to join is to browse online Discord server lists via an online directory. Here are some of the more popular Discord server directories worth exploring.

  • Disboard.org: The largest Discord server directory with categories for learning languages, music, LGBT, and politics in addition to the usual video game topics.
  • Discord.me: Another reliable server directory with thousands of options per category.
  • DiscordServers.com: This directory features a massive selection of gaming and geek culture Discord servers to join.

Other Ways to Find Discord Servers to Join

You can find popular Discord servers via the built-in server search or one of the above directories, but you can also discover many elsewhere online as well.

  • Find Discord servers on social media. Many companies and individuals will often share their Discord servers on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Join exclusive servers via Patreon. Patreon features strong integration with Discord, and many creators offer exclusive access to private Discord servers to their supporters.
  • Check Facebook Groups for servers. Some Facebook Groups also have Discord servers for their members to connect in.
  • Video game streamers are all about Discord. Many small and large streamers on Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming own their Discord servers for their community to chat about their streams, gaming, and other related topics. Check your favorite streamer’s profile page to see if they have a Discord server to join.

You can join as many Discord servers as you like, so feel free to browse and search until you find the online community that’s best for you. However, if you’re finding it hard to find the correct server, why not create a Discord server and invite others to join and build a new community with you?
