Orvis Mission Rod Review

As I get older the wear and tear on my body starts to show. I’ve been nursing two torn rotator cuffs that have been more than a handful to deal with. The downside of this has been more restricted movement in my shoulders which has definitely had an impact on my Spey casting.

I’d been giving this some thought over the closed season and wondered if a slightly longer rod may help a little.

My usual rod for my home water is either an 11 or 12ft 7wt and so not wanting to shift lines around with a new rod arrival, the Orvis Mission 13ft 7wt fitted my criteria perfectly.

This is a great rod for a small- to medium-sized river for anyone looking for an allrounder.

The rod, built in the US, is a pleasing matte olive with subtle edging in orange. If cork is your thing, then the quality is excellent.

Instead of a few casts I’ve spent a good number of hours fishing the rod and have got to know it a little over this time. It feels light in the hand yet has plenty of backbone. I’ve yet to hook a salmon on the rod but the progressive middle-to-tip action feels as though it will have enough in it to keep a springer in check.

I’ve strung a few lines through it and it will cast a Skagit line (500gr) with ease. I have also tried a 50ft Spey head that although worked just fine, put some stress on my shoulders but I could cast it with a 10ft S3 sink tip and heavy tube fly. Where the rod really sings for me though is with a VersiTip line set up. The 38ft head works beautifully with the rod and the river I’m fishing.

I found I really enjoyed making a short, Scandi-style, single Spey cast – it was easy. Sure, the more modern circle and snap casts work well too but the Speys, for me, were just plain fun.

I asked my wife to try the rod down a pool we were fishing and the response was equally positive. She felt the rod was forgiving, easy to work with and super smooth to cast. She said that the less effort she put in the more she got back.

So, negatives. There aren’t any that really stick out in the 50 plus hours I’ve been fishing it. I am always about how the blank performs and so far, I haven’t picked up another Spey rod since first using it. I guess that means I like it.

This rod is cleverly priced at £798 and the longer rods in the range are £898

The salmon rod line-up ranges from 11ft 7wt to 15ft 10wt and all rods come with the usual Orvis warranty. More at Orvis

The Mission Two-Handed 4-Weight 11′ 4″” Fly Rod is a medium trout Spey rod that will allow you to fish parts of the river your single-hander won’t reach. Great for soft hackles, heavier nymphs, and streamers up to 3″”. The Mission 114-4 will help you uncover new possibilities in familiar waters. The Orvis Mission Two-Handed Rod Series is a comprehensive American-made seven-rod series encompassing the two-handed casting spectrum from compact and versatile 11-foot rods to big-water 14- and 15-foot models. Mission rods are the result of Helios™ 3 design advancement techniques, tested by experts from the Pacific Northwest to Europe. Helios 3 construction design dampens vibrations, making casts easier and more accurate with an inherent autocorrect that allows even a mediocre cast to be rescued by these rods. The increased hoop strength we obtain by using H3 construction means less energy lost and more efficient energy transfer. It is easier to develop fluid power in the cast with less effort, because the rods dampen quicker with no wobble, shooting long casts with accurate presentation. Made in USA.

Shop Staff Notes:  The new Orvis Mission 1144-4 Trout Spey Rod is an excellent addition to the Orvis Trout Spey line up!  It’s now Strainer’s favorite Trout Spey rod for the MO!  If you’re new to Trout Spey and a premium rod is what you’re after, this would be a perfect rod for you.  An excellent choice for the Missouri -both below Holter and below Hauser (LOG) as it can handle the bigger flies, bigger fish, heavier tips when needed and handle the wind.  Enough oomph to punch out a big streamer with a sink tip (Versileader, MOW, Mission) but enough sensitivity for soft hackles on a standard leader. It’s also fun to fight fish with as it’s not too stiff so even those foot long trout make for a sporty battle but enough backbone that when you do hook into piggy, you’ll be well equipped to win most of those battles.   We also offer this rod in 8 different Outfits that give you great deal of selection on what type of fishing you want to do with this sweet spey rod.  After playing with this rod in Fall 2020, we like to bump up the line size on the RIO Trout Spey Fly Line to the #5 (350grain) when using this rod to throw medium to bigger streamers (#6-#2).

ROD OUTFIT NOTES:
Outfit #1 includes the new RIO InTouch TROUT SPEY Fly Line and 2, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders.  This line is easy to cast and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through he guides easily.  This line has plenty of power to make it super easy to cast. It’s a good choice for all around trout fishing -fishing dries on the surface, nymphing with indicators, stripping streamers or swinging streamers or soft hackles.  (If you’re looking to use this rod mostly for streamers, we recommend using the #5 line.  Let us know if you want us to do this for you with this package.)

Outfit #2 includes the new RIO InTouch SKAGIT Trout Spey Line and a set of 2 Skagit MOW Tips.  If you want one of the easiest lines to cast and having a lot of power to turn over sink tips and/or heavy streamers, this line is the perfect choice.  It’s also very easy to set up to use.   All you need to do is add about 3′-6′ of butt section and tippet or just tippet material on the end and your MOW tip and you are ready to ply with the waters for aquatic adrenaline!  (SET UP TIP:  Take an old leader -doesn’t really matter what leader, just one that the tippet end is trashed. From the perfection loop at the butt section, cut it off so it’s about 3′ long. Then tie a LARGE perfection loop on the thinner end (leave the small loop that came on the leader on the butt section). Loop the small loop (on the butt section) to the end of the MOW Tip.  Then loop about 12″-15″ of tippet material (like Mirage Fluoracarbon Tippet or RIO Fluoroflex Plus in 0X, 1X or 2X) on the end of that. Your fly will be tied to the end of that tippet material (I use a Non-Slip Mono Loop).  You can pre-tie flies with the tippet and then just loop-to-loop them on the end of your leader, super quick, super easy -especially when your fingers are cold and numb. Also makes changing MOW tips a breeze, just doing loop-to-loop and never having to cut or tie on anything.)

Outfit #3 includes the very popular RIO SCANDI-SHORT VersiTip Shooting Head System that offers a lot of power for big, articulated flies but still allows you to deliver precise and delicate presentations for smaller flies or for swinging in shallow water or even skating dries on the surface.  This line is great for newer Spey anglers or experts.  All you need to add to this Outfit system is a Leader and some Tippet -and of course your fly. Scandinavian shooting heads are very popular in the Spey arena and this shorter version lends itself well to Trout Spey. The head length on this line is longer than the new InTouch Trout Spey.

Outfit #4 includes the awesome RIO SWITCH CHUCKER Fly Line and 1, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders and 1, 10′ Light Skagit MOW Tip.  This line is super easy to cast with lots of power and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through the guides easily.  This line is pretty versatile- it can chuck heavy sink tips and big flies just like a Skagit line but it does have a longer, tapered head and a long, 14′ handling section that allows for more types of fishing techniques.  This line can fish effectively a Nymph Rig set up or even throw a dry fly (though it’s much better for skating dries, not fishing them up stream, dead drift -it’s too chunky and clunky to fish a dry fly delicately. Skating is good with this line. Strainer has used this line for skated dries for Steelhead in BC.)  We include 1, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders (3ips) and 1 RIO MOW Tip (10′ T-8).  You can set up the leader system exactly as described in Outfit #2 above or just use standard 9′ or 12′ leaders.

Outfit #5 is the ultimate outfit in versatility as it includes the new RIO InTouch TROUT SPEY Shooting HEADAND the RIO InTouch SKAGIT Trout Spey Shooting HEAD, a matched size RIO ConnectCore Shooting Line,  2, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders and 2, 10′ RIO Light MOW Tips and a RIO Shooting Wallet to hold the tips and the shooting head not in use. This gives you the choice to easily switch from a lighter line for more delicate presentations to a more powerful line to chuck streamers -all on a single spool so there’s no need to buy a separate spool for your reel. To change techniques, it’s just a matter of loop-to-loop connections.

Outfit #6 is similar to #2 and #4 but is from the new Orvis Mission SKAGIT Shooting Head, a matched size Mission Shooting Line,  2, 10′ Orvis Mission Sink Tips. Super easy to cast and very effective at fishing medium to big streamers or when you need to throw heavier flies and/or sink tips to fish a deeper. Not that you can’t throw smaller flies or fish shallow, but Skagit is really good at hucking big junk with no effort.

Outfit #7 is similar to #1 but is from the new Orvis Mission SCANDI Shooting Head, a matched size Mission Shooting Line, and  2, 10′ Orvis Polyleaders (we may substitute RIO Versileaders if we are out of Orvis Polyleaders -FYI -they are almost exactly the same thing.) This is a good choice to easily fish smaller flies with a more delicate presentation. This line will throw bigger streamers but it’s not ideal for heavy streamers and/or heavy tips. Excellent choice for summer or early fall conditions when you don’t need to get down deep.

Outfit #8 is similar to #5 but is all Orvis and includes the Orvis Mission SCANDI Shooting HeadAND the Orvis Mission SKAGIT Shooting Head, a matched size Mission Shooting Line,  2, 10′ Orvis Polyleaders and 2, 8′ Orvis Mission Sink Tips and a Shooting Wallet to hold the tips and the shooting head not in use. This gives you the choice to easily switch from a lighter line for more delicate presentations to a more powerful line to chuck streamers -all on a single spool so there’s no need to buy a separate spool for your reel. To change techniques, it’s just a matter of loop-to-loop connections.

Orvis Mission Spey and Switch Rods

The Mission rods from Orvis are well-designed Spey and Switch rods made for anglers who prefer versatility and all water performance. Built with Helios 3 Technology, these rods feature a Medium-Fast action blank and accommodate a variety of casting styles. Practical features including composite cork in high-wear areas make these rods efficient and extremely durable. If you’re in the market for a new Spey rod, whether you’re a beginner or an expert, these rods are some of the smoothest on the market.

Blank

Helios 3 Technology - The Mission rods are built on the back of Helios 3 technology and construction. Orvis has built the Mission rods to have a strategically reinforced rod blank to maximize strength without increased overall weight. Helios 3 tech creates a blank that tracks beautifully, takes a truer path to the target, and can land a fly accurately from anywhere.

Guides

Hard Chrome Stripping Guides w/SiC Insert - Hard chrome stripping guides keep the Mission rods lightweight and functional. These guides feature a SiC insert for minimal line friction and added durability.

Hard Chrome Snake Guides - Hard chrome snake guides are a classic in contemporary fly fishing and there’s a reason most major manufacturers use these guides… they’re simple, effective, and stand up to weather and wear.

Reel Seat

Type III Anodized Aluminum w/Double Downlocking Component - The reel seat on the Mission combines durability and craftsmanship. Grey anodized aluminum ensures maximum strength and a solid aluminum insert keeps the rod sleek and stylish. A double dowlocking component anchors large reels in place during long days on the water.

Rod Tube

Aluminum Rod Tube - The Mission comes with an Orange rod tube that sports catchy black Orvis lettering. This Mission-specific tube protects the rod on the water and during travel and storage.

Warranty

The Orvis 25-Year Guarantee - As of 5/8/2019, Orvis rods fall under the one-of-a-kind Orvis Guarantee. If broken within a quarter-century of purchase, Orvis vows to fix your rod. If they cannot fix the rod, Orvis will replace it regardless of circumstance. Normal wear and tear, accidental breakage, misuse and mistreatment along with anything else resulting in a broken rod are all covered in the Orvis 25-Year Guarantee. No questions asked. If Orvis cannot fix your broken rod and the rod has been discontinued, they will replace it with a current rod-model of equal value.

I immediately wanted to shove a penis into the doctor's ass, and I spat on the ass gradually, with slow movements began. To creep into the waiting anus.
