Arnot Health to offer Covid vaccine clinics; third shot for immunocompromised

First Southern Tier, NY COVID-19 vaccinations: Arnot Health workers line up for shots

Several dozen Arnot Health employees became among the first frontline healthcare workers in the Southern Tier to receive a new COVID-19 vaccine this week.

The vaccine was developed by Pfizer as part of Operation Warp Speed, a public-private partnership set up to fast track creation of vaccines to fight the virus.

The vaccine was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and distribution to medical facilities in all 50 states started Monday.

Among Arnot Health employees receiving the vaccine Tuesday were nurses, physicians, and other staff from Elmira's Arnot Ogden Medical Center emergency department, intensive care unit and COVID-19 units, according to the phasing criteria established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Registered nurse Mary Ann Baker administers the COVID-19 vaccine to intensive care unit nurse Kail Burfield, the first Arnot Health employee to receive the new Pfizer vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Elsewhere in the Southern Tier, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said there is no timetable for the rollout in the county. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday afternoon United Health Services would oversee the distribution of the vaccine in the Southern Tier.

Arnot Health officials planned to administer the vaccine across all shifts until the initial allotment of the Pfizer vaccine is exhausted, according to spokesman Ken Roberts.

A second COVID-19 vaccine, developed by Moderna, is expected to receive emergency FDA approval this week.

Arnot Health hopes to receive an allotment of that vaccine soon as well, Roberts said.

The Pfizer vaccine requires a second dose to be administered after 21 days, while the Moderna vaccine will require a second dose after 28 days.

Guthrie, which operates several hospitals and medical offices in New  York and Pennsylvania, is still waiting for its allotment of vaccine.

"We do not have specific information on when and how much of the vaccine Guthrie will receive, but plans are in place for prioritizing individuals, vaccine storage and administration," Guthrie Chief Quality Officer Dr. Michael Scalzone said in a statement. "Guided by the CDC and New York Department of Health, our healthcare workers with the highest risk of exposure will be early recipients of this safe and effective tool for slowing the pandemic."

Arnot Health Chief of Pediatrics Talks about the Measles Vaccine

Arnot Health delivers immunity to the community

« Back to All Stories

In the COVID-19 era, healthcare providers must find creative solutions to delivering accessible vaccines and evolving to meet the demands of the pandemic. Partnerships between providers and trusted community organizations have proven essential to immunization efforts. Arnot Health has provided more than 30,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine in its community. That number represents approximately 14,000 fully vaccinated people, with the remaining individuals due for their second dose to reach fully vaccinated status in the coming weeks.

Arnot’s dedicated staff and volunteers have worked with community partners, including the Arnot Mall, Erway Ambulance, the Economic Opportunity Program and several local churches and agencies that have volunteered space, personnel and talents to this collaborative community effort. These partnerships have enabled the hospital to reach traditionally underserved and special needs populations, removing barriers to receiving the vaccine for those groups.

Arnot continues to offer residents vaccination clinics in various locations and at times designed to fit any schedule. To date, 28,424 Chemung County residents have received at least one dose of vaccine and 21,145 of those individuals have completed their vaccine series. In Steuben County, 29,501 residents have received at least one dose of vaccine and 19,514 of those individuals have completed their vaccine series, with the Southern Tier having one of the highest vaccination percentages in the state. Approximately 25,000 vaccines were given at Chemung County sites since efforts began with frontline hospital staff from around the region Dec. 15, 2020. Arnot has given another 5,000 doses in Steuben County via efforts coordinated by Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath.
