Error Code P0113: Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input

Error code P0113 indicates that the computer has received a high voltage signal from the intake air temperature sensor. This code will occur when the powertrain control module (PCM) receives a voltage of 5 volts or more from the IAT. This indicates a problem between the IAT and the PCM.


The vehicle’s PCM, or computer, sends a consistent reference voltage of about 5 volts to the IAT. Because it is a thermistor, the IAT resists that charge based on its temperature and the resulting voltage is returned to the PCM. The PCM uses this information to adjust such things as the air/fuel mixture and EGR valve.

If the IAT sends a voltage to the PCM that is in excess of 5 volts, the PCM returns the P0113 code. This error code is specific to voltage and will not be set if the IAT is simply returning unusual readings.

What to Check

If the check engine light appears, use an OBD-II scanner to assess the error code. If it returns a P0113 error, there are a few things to examine.

Check the Air Temperature Reading

Allow the engine to run until it is warm. Use a scan gauge to compare the air temperature reading to the coolant temperature. Typically, a functional IAT sensor will report a slightly lower temperature than the coolant temperature sensor.

Examine Wiring Between the PCM and IAT

This error can be caused by wiring that has come loose or corroded, so examine the physical circuit between the IAT and the vehicle’s computer.

Test the Resistance

First, remove the IAT from the vehicle. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance of the IAT at room temperature. Then apply heat to the IAT sensor tip with a hair dryer and check to see if the resistance has decreased. No change in resistance or an infinite resistance reading indicate that the IAT sensor is faulty.

How to Fix It

Because a P0113 code is most frequently caused by either a dysfunctional circuit or a failed IAT sensor, the most common repair is simply replacing the faulty component. You can also try cleaning the IAT sensor tip and replacing the grounds.

Replacement IAT sensors are not usually very expensive, so replacing one is not a costly repair. Furthermore, a P0113 error may very rarely indicate a problem with the PCM. After you’ve fixed the IAT, clear the error codes and run the vehicle. If the P0113 code reappears, that could indicate a faulty PCM.

When you turn the key to start the engine, the engine control module (ECM) looks at data from the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT), the intake air temperature sensor (IAT), throttle position sensor (TPS), and the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Based on the readings from all those sensors, the ECM determines the proper air/fuel mixture to start and run the engine. However, if the data from one of those sensors is bad, the air/fuel mixture will be too rich or too lean. Either of those conditions can cause a hard start and poor idling.
In this case, the P0113 trouble code is indicating that the IAT sensor is sending a high voltage signal to the ECM, making it think the incoming air is really cold when it’s not. You can test the IAT with a digital volt ohmmeter (DVOM). Set it to the volts scale and connect one lead to a good ground. Back-probe the green/black wire at the IAT with the key in the RUN position. Voltage should read approximately 2.4-2.8-volts when outside air temperature is 68°F (1.6-2.0-volts at 104°F). If the reading is higher than the corresponding outside temperature dictates, the IAT may be malfunctioning. However, there’s also a possibility that the 5-volts provided to the IAT by the ECM is shorting to the green/black wire in the wiring harness. You can replace the IAT (the most likely suspect) for about $10, or you can check for a short in the wiring harness. To check the harness, unplug the connector from the IAT and check the voltage at the green/black wire at the ECM. It should be 0-volts.

The Intake Air Temperature Sensor measures the rise and fall of the air temperature inside the Intake Manifold. This provides critical data needed for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to control the Air Fuel Ratio, the Ignition Spark Timing and many components of the Emission Control Systems.

When diagnosing a P0113 code, it is important to record the freeze frame information and then to duplicate the code setting conditions with a test drive while paying close attention to engine load, throttle position, RPM, and road speed on a data streaming scan tool. As you drive the vehicle, compare these values to the Intake Air Temperature Sensor PID or parameter ID. The Intake Air Temperature Sensor voltage values should rise and fall with changes in engine temperature. Compare the Intake Air Temperature or IAT readings to the Coolant Temperature Sensor readings, as they should move in tandem with each other. However, the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor will have a much higher temperature range.

Check the IAT sensor connector with the key on and the engine off. There needs to be a steady 5 volt reference voltage and a very good ground. Find and use the proper engine performance wiring diagram to discern the proper color and position of these wires in the connector.

It never hurts to do a key on-engine off voltage output test of the IAT sensor. Typically, I CAREFULLY use a heat gun to raise the temperature of the area around the sensor and study the change in values of the Intake Air Temperature. It's important to use the scan tool data stream as this will verify the IAT harness and connections.
