Wisconsin native reopens The Tractor House
Greg Kasner likes a challenge. He has worked on farms, in quarries and started a successful construction and trucking business. But he has heard running a restaurant is one of the toughest challenges.
I was bored riding around in the truck, Kasner said. Money doesnt mean as much to me as being involved in something thats challenging.
Two months ago, he reopened home-style restaurant The Tractor House at 405 Highway 124 E. in Hallsville, running it with his wife and daughter. Formerly owned and operated by Lydia Bell, the business had been closed for several months, Kasner said. But much of the equipment was still available, and Kasner thought it seemed like a good place to try his hand at the restaurant industry.
The Wisconsin native moved to Columbia four years ago when his parents left the state for warmer climes in Jefferson City. Before he moved here, he owned a construction business remodeling houses and developed a relationship with Wisconsin-based hardware retailer Menards. That turned into a request from Menards for Kasner to start his own trucking business and contract with the company.
I said, Well, geez, I got this construction business going, Kasner said. But then they showed me that those trucks make pretty good money, so I kind of changed my mind there.
When he moved to Mid-Missouri, he planned to find a spot to open a restaurant from the start. But things changed. All of a sudden, Menards calls me and says, Yeah, we know you went down South, and were gonna open a store down there and we want someone experienced to run the trucking, Kasner said.
His local trucking business, GK Delcon, is doing brisk business for the hardware store, and he finally felt he was at a point to fit in time for his restaurant project. While he stuck to the home-style cooking theme, he also brought on a pastry chef and plans to add some signature dishes. The Tractor House also started a Sunday brunch buffet, which has proved quite popular albeit, mainly on the Sundays when the local churches arent having their own brunches.
The Tractor House is closed until Wednesday while Kasner goes back up North for the holidays. But he plans on coming back with plenty of coolers full of haddock for the restaurants Friday-night fish fries.
All the fish fries up in that neck of the woods are like that, Kasner said. I dont see anyone selling haddock, so we want to a find a few dishes special to The Tractor House.
