JTS Founder’s message at “OUTCRY for Justice” to give #Justice4Women

JTS Editor | March 12, 2019

The founder of Justice Thru Storytelling, Kelle Lynn, carried the “Double Injustice to Women” message to fellow advocates and lawmakers at the National Day of Empathy in Lansing on March 5.

Read her speech below which includes comments from Chief Justice Bridget McCormack and Prosecutor D.J. Hilson, who is the president of PAAM.

In October 2017, the #MeToo movement thrust women’s voices and stories of sexual assault and harassment into the spotlight. Women no longer felt so alone as they began to open up to one another on social media and declare, “This happened to me, too, and I’ve suffered in silence this whole time.” In many ways, life for women just started to change for the better.

But we’ve only just begun.

Because there’s a group of women who have been completely forgotten. Their voices are stifled by prison walls and barbed-wired fences. These women have suffered the double injustice of living like prisoners in their own homes, affected by intimate-partner violence in ways that required them to defend their own lives and many times the lives of their children.

When they struck back at their abusers in acts of self-defense, they ended up in a criminal justice system that either didn’t believe their claims of abuse or painted a picture to make them look like cold-blooded murderers…a system that remains ignorant of how these women were just trying to survive. The stigmatization of these women is a constant fight because, as many would say, they are in prison because they DESERVE to be. They must have done something wrong or they wouldn’t be in prison.

We’re ALL here because we know that’s not true! We’re here today to make positive changes on behalf of our criminal justice system, to right the wrongs, to open the eyes and hearts of those who can bring justice where it’s deserved.

As the founder of Justice Thru Storytelling, I am here to give a voice to the women who are incarcerated at the women’s prison in Ypsilanti for the double injustice they endured because of intimate-partner violence.

Our efforts are specifically focused on changing a 1995 Michigan ruling called People v Christel that severely limits expert testimony in Michigan courtrooms in cases of domestic violence.

First of all, I want to give a brief visual of what’s happening to women worldwide: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime states that an average of 137 women across the world are killed by a partner or family member every day. Their conclusion: “The home is the most likely place for a woman to be killed.” More than half of the 87,000 women killed in 2017 were reported to have died at the hands of those closest to them.

This has been an epidemic for years. Women are in a kill-or-be-killed situation, but our criminal justice system turns a blind eye and puts these women in prison when they strike back.

I’ve spent many hours visiting women in prison and learning from them. One of the things I heard over and over that has had a huge impact on me is this: If I had defended my life against a complete stranger, I would never have ended up in prison. But, because it was an intimate partner, I was NOT believed. I was blamed for not leaving even though it was impossible to do so. I was powerless over my abuser.

I’d like to share a brief story about a Michigan woman and her high-profile case in Oakland County. Her case highlighted the People v Christel ruling by bringing it and its unfairness into the spotlight.

In 2005, Oakland County Circuit Judge Jack McDonald had been serving as an elected judge for 12 years when he presided over the case of a woman who killed her husband of 31 years in an act of self-defense. Her husband learned she was secretly planning to leave him…a time when it’s most dangerous for a woman since the abuser is losing his control.

Unfortunately, the case was very high profile in the media with a number of distortions being printed. The prosecutor in this case took an aggressive stance and convinced a jury to sentence this woman to life in prison without parole.

But Judge McDonald had a conscience and couldn’t fathom this woman dying in prison. He knew there was no way she planned – premeditated -– to kill her husband. He had presided over many murder cases, sent people to prison, slept well at night, but this was one case that haunted him. So he made the bold decision to overturn the jury verdict.

Why?

Judge McDonald learned important facts from Dr. Lenore Walker, a nationwide expert on battered woman’s syndrome, who was in his courtroom to testify on behalf of this woman. But People v Christel put severe limitations of her testimony and what she could NOT tell the jury.

Dr. Walker stated, “I’ve testified in over 500 trials in 35 states and never has my testimony been so limited as in the state of Michigan.”

Fast forward five years. In 2010, Federal Judge Bernard Friedman reviewed all the evidence from Dr. Lenore Walker. He overturned the verdict as well and ordered that the woman have a new trial or be released from prison in 120 days. She’s 66 years old and still there.

To this day, Judge McDonald has been steadfast in his decision because he firmly believes the jury was never presented ALL the evidence because Dr. Walker could not educate them on battered women’s syndrome…something these jurors knew nothing about.

As McDonald stated, “Had the jurors been able to hear the information from Dr. Lenore Walker, it is a high probability they would never have sent her to prison for life and their verdict may have been manslaughter or self-defense.”

We focused our efforts to outgoing Governor Snyder last year with hopes he would give her clemency. In October, I hosted a Double Injustice to Women campaign event specifically to talk about women in prison for defending their lives and the People v Christel ruling.

We were honored to have Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget McCormack, who is now Chief Justice, come to the event specifically to educate people on the effects this ruling has in Michigan.

She explained to us that, as a judge, there is no choice but to follow this ruling and it’s completely up to our lawmakers to change it as other states have done.

When an attorney in the audience asked how we can help, Justice McCormack responded that we can collectively get this message out to our prosecutors. It’s imperative they have a better understanding of intimate partner violence.

We at Justice Thru Storytelling did just that. We immediately went to the president of PAAM, DJ Hilson, to discuss People v Christel. He connected us to PAAM’s Violence Against Women Resource Prosecutor to find out what PAAM offers its prosecutors about intimate partner violence training as well as to start a conversation about where we might be able to collaborate in a future training. In addition, Mr. Hilson agreed to have PAAM’s Legislative Committee review any legislative language expanding expert testimony in our Michigan courtrooms that is presented by this group and provide feedback.

Legendary civil rights attorney Dean Robb was quoted as saying, “Over 40 years ago, I represented a woman who killed her husband in self-defense and won an acquittal on her behalf. However, Michigan has made no progress in the last 40 years.” One of his final pleas to lawmakers is to stop cutting off the lifeline for these women and change People v Christel.

California did exactly what we are trying to do in Michigan and many women were freed from prison as a result of new legislation.

In January 2019, it was announced that outgoing Ohio Gov. Kasich granted clemency to a woman incarcerated for killing her abusive ex-boyfriend in 2005. The Ohio Parole Board recommended Gov. Kasich commute her sentence after it found evidence of battered woman’s syndrome was not presented at her trials as well as evidence that supported her claims her boyfriend had choked her, beaten her, and attacked her with a knife.

The Michigan Women’s Justice & Clemency Project in Ann Arbor filed several commutations for women with similar cases. Many of the women have already served 30 years. The pleas fell on deaf ears and many remain incarcerated today.

It’s 2019…a new year with a new governor and we’re staying hopeful. But we need your help and support in drafting new legislation that can help these women get out of prison as well as pave the way to keep battered women from being charged and ending up there.

Imagine your own daughter, sister, mother, co-worker suffering in silence from intimate-partner abuse and the powerlessness they experience at home, let alone in our Michigan courts.

Let’s empower them today and let Michigan be known as a state that gives #Justice4Women.

Demand Justice

The goal of this campaign is to convince our legislators in the state of Michigan to change People v Christel to model the California law in order to bring #Justice4Women.

Daily inspect the function and existence of the safety appliances before you start the machine. Do not attempt operations in this case, protect the machine by unplugging the mains cord. Remove all loose clothing and confine long hair. Before operating the machine, remove tie, rings, watches, other jewellery, and roll up sleeves above the elbows. Wear safety shoes; never wear leisure shoes or sandals. Always wear the approved working outfit : - safety goggles - ear protection - dust protection Do not wear gloves while operating this machine. For the safe handling of sawblades wear work gloves. Observe the chapter “save operation” in this manual. Check the correct rotation of the sawblade before operating the machine. Do not start cutting operation until sawblade is at full speed. Control the stopping time of the machine, it may not be longer than 10 seconds. Do not use side pressure to stop rotating blade. Insure that the workpiece does not roll when cutting round pieces. Use suitable table extensions and supporting aids for difficult to handle workpieces. Always hold and guide the workpieces safely during machining. Pay particular attention to instructions on reducing the risk of kickback. The supplied raving knife must always be used. Adjust the space to the sawblade to be between 2 to 5mm. Do not perform any operation freehand. Never reach around or over the saw blade. When ripping narrow workpieces (<120mm) use as push-stick or pushwood. Always use crossfeed guide for cutting off. The use of dado-blades is not permissible. Make sure that small cut off workpieces will not be caught and thrown away by the rising saw blade teeth. Take care when slotting. Remove cut and jammed workpieces only when motor is turned off and the machine is at a complete standstill. Install the machine so that there is sufficient space for safe operation and workpiece handling. Keep work area well lighted. The machine is designed to operate in closed rooms and must be placed stable on firm and levelled ground. Make sure that the power cord does not impede work and cause people to trip. Keep the floor around the machine clean and free of scrap material, oil and grease. Stay alert! Give your work undivided attention. Use common sense. Keep an ergonomic body position. Maintain a balanced stance at all times. Do not operate the machine when you are tired. Do not operate the machine under the influence of drugs, alcohol or any medication. Be aware that medication can change your behaviour. Keep children and visitors a safe distance from the work area. 4 Never reach into the machine while it is operating or running down. Never leave a running machine unattended. Before you leave the workplace switch off the machine. Do not operate the electric tool near inflammable liquids or gases. Observe the fire fighting and fire alert options, for example the fire extinguisher operation and place. Do not use the machine in a dump environment and do not expose it to rain. Wood dust is explosive and can also represent a risk to health. Dust form some tropical woods in particular, and from hardwoods like beach and oak, is classified as a carcinogenic substance. Always use a suitable dust extraction device Before machining, remove any nails and other foreign bodies from the workpiece. Specifications regarding the maximum or minimum size of the workpiece must be observed. Do not remove chips and workpiece parts until the machine is at a complete standstill. Never operate with the guards not in place – serious risk of injury! Do not stand on the machine. Connection and repair work on the electrical installation may be carried out by a qualified electrician only. Always unwind any extension cords fully. Have a damaged or worn cord replaced immediately. Do not use the machine when the ONOFF switch does not operate correctly. Make all machine adjustments or maintenance with the machine unplugged from the power source. Use only sawblades according to EN 847-1. Never use sawblades made from High Speed Steel (HSS). Take care that the selection of the saw blade depends on the material to be cut. Remove defective sawblades immediately. A worn table insert must be replaced. 3.3 Remaining hazards When using the machine according to regulations some remaining hazards may still exist The moving sawblade in the work area can cause injury. Broken saw blades can cause injuries. Thrown workpieces can lead to injury Tipping of the workpiece due to insufficient support can lead to injury. Wood chips and sawdust can be health hazards. Be sure to wear personal protection gear such as safety goggles ear- and dust protection. Use a suitable dust exhaust system. The use of incorrect mains supply or a damaged power cord can lead to injuries caused by electricity. The type and condition of the sawblade is important in keeping the noise level as low as possible. This does not negate the fact that extra safety equipment such as ear protection must be used. The fence scale is factory set. Adjustment can be made by moving the pivot point along the T-grove. Confirm by test cuts. Telescopic arm adjustment: The telescopic arm is adjusted ex works. For correction, move the sliding table so that telescopic arm reaches out straight (like shown in Fig 12) Fig 10 When, after some time, the plastic protection cap at the front on the cross-cut fence is cut away, a new one has to be installed (part no.: JTS600-178). Align the crosscut table height with the two hex nuts (S). Use crosscut fence profile (U) to check. Mounting Sawblade See chapter 7.1 Move the sliding table forward. For example: if the crosscut table falls, tighten the left adjust screw (T, Fig 13) until the crosscut table does not move in height during sliding table travel. Mounting Saw Guard See chapter 7.3 Loosen and tighten the adjust screws and lock nuts as needed. Adjusting Raving Knife See chapter 7.2 5.3 Dust connection Before initial operation, the machine must be connected to a dust extractor. The suction should switch on automatically when the saw is switched on. A connecting hose, a hose support, a Y-piece and a hose tye are supplied with the machine. Mounting Hose Support: Attach the hose support (AA, Fig 14) to the table extension with the supplied fastening clip. Fig 11 Crosscut table setup Fig 13 7 Attention: -Check first if the saw spindle runs freely and if all safety devices are fitted before starting the machine. For safety reasons this must only be done without the sawblade installed! - If the direction of rotation is not correct, the phase converter inside the CCE Euro plug must be pushed in and turned 180°. (Clockwise direction of the spindle is correct). Operating hints: Work only with a sharp and flawless sawblade. Take care that the selection of the saw blade depends on the material to be cut. Use a suitable wedge to prevent round timber from turning under the pressure of the cut. Use suitable table extensions and supporting aids for difficult to handle workpieces. Always hold and guide the workpieces safely during machining. Fig 14 5.5 Starting operation You can start the machine with the green On-button. The red Off-button stops the machine. In case of machine overload the motor overload cut-off will react. After appr.10 min of cooling the machine can be started again. Do not perform any operation freehand. Take care when slotting. When ripping narrow workpieces (<120mm) use as push-stick or pushwood. 6. Machine operation Correct working position: In front of the machine standing out of the line of cutting (danger zone). Fig 17 Fig 15 Make sure that small cut off workpieces will not be caught and thrown away by the rising saw blade teeth. Mount the Y-piece (EE) and the connecting hose (H) for the upper dust collection. The flow rate on the suction port dia. 100mm must be 20m/sec. Remove cut and jammed workpieces only when motor is turned off and the machine is at a complete standstill. Flexible hoses must be of nonflammable quality, and must be connected to the machine ground system. Pay particular attention on reducing the risk of kickback. Fig 16 5.4 Mains connection Mains connection and any extension cords used must comply with applicable regulations. The mains voltage must comply with the information on the machine licence plate. The mains connection must have a 16A surge-proof fuse. Only use connection cables marked H07RN-F Connections and repairs to the electrical equipment may only be carried out by qualified electricians. Workpiece handling: Hands placed flat on the workpiece outside the cutting area. Feed the workpiece towards the saw blade in the direction of the saw line. The supplied raving knife must always be used. For the authorized use of the machine observe the appendix A “safe operation“ (on the last pages of this operating manual) A.1.: Ripping Push the workpiece steadily forward; complete the cut as a single movement. Setup and adjustments 8 A.3.: Crosscutting on rip fence General note: Setup and adjustment work may only be carried out after the machine is protected against accidental starting by pulling the mains plug. Fig 18 Loosen the arbor nut (J, Fig 19) while stopping the arbor against rotation with the locking pin (K). 7.1 Changing sawblade The sawblade has to meet the technical specification. Fig 20 Use only sawblades according to EN 847-1 The raving knife (P, Fig 21) can be adjusted in both vertical and horizontal direction. The maximum diameter of the saw blades used on the machine is 250 mm. Check sawblade for flaws (cracks, broken teeth, bending) before installation. Do not use faulty sawblades. Warning: The use off HSS saw blades is prohibited; use only carbide tipped saw blades. The sawblade teeth must point in cutting direction (down) Always wear suitable gloves when handling sawblades. WARNING: When installing or changing saw blade, always disconnect saw from power source, unplug! Remove the crosscut table. Remove the sliding table. Raise the main sawblade to its highest position. Fig 19 Attention: left hand thread. Remove the arbor nut (J) and flange (I). Place saw blade on arbor shaft making sure teeth point down at the front of the saw. Reinstall flange, washer and arbor nut and securely tighten. Remove the locking pin (K). Check the correct position of the raving knife in regards to the saw blade (see Chapter 7.2). Loosen the 2 screws (EE, Fig18) and remove the sheetmetal protective cover (DD). The height setting has to be adjusted in such a way that the sawguard bottom never exceeds more than 3 mm above the highest placed sawblade tooth. After height adjustment always locks the central bolt (Q). Reinstall the saw guard and the protective cover (DD). Never remove this raving knife. Kickbacks are severe and very dangerous. 7.2 Mounting the raving knife No submerged cuts by removing the raving knife and/or saw guard may be performed. Remove the saw guard. Changing saw blade: Move the sliding table to the end to get access to the sawblade. Fig 21 The supplied raving knife must always be used. The machine is equipped with a raving knife for the use of sawblades diameter 250 mm. The raving knife has to be adjusted in such a way that over its entire length the gap between sawblade and raving knife does not exceed min. 3 mm and max. 8 mm (Fig 20). 7.3 Mounting the saw guard The sawguard (O, Fig 21) must always be used. Attach the saw guard to the raving knife (P). The sawguard must be lowered to the workpiece to minimise the amount of exposed teeth. Adjustment shall never be performed when the machine is running. The saw guard has to be connected to the dust extractor system. 7.4 Rising and tilting sawblade 9 Setup adjustments of the sawblade shall never be performed when the machine is running. Use the front hand wheel to raise the sawblade (one turn of the handwheel equals to approximately 3 mm of height setting). When cross cutting using the rip fence, to avoid the wood getting stuck between the fence and the riving knife (resulting in a highly dangerous kickback) it is necessary to position the fence so that its end corresponds with the front of the sawblade (Fig 23). Use the right hand wheel to tilt the sawblade. Keep the inside of the cabinet clear of sawdust and wood chips. Make sure the motor fan and fan cover are also kept clear of sawdust. All protective and safety devices must be re-attached immediately after completed cleaning, repair and maintenance work. Defective safety devices must be replaced immediately. Both 45° and 90° positive stops are factory set. A worn table insert must be replaced. Start the machine with care. Removal of dust chute blockage: Cut off pieces can block off the chip flow in the lower saw guard. 7.5 Sliding table setup Sliding table setup shall never be performed when the machine is running. When loading panels and when rip cutting the sliding table must be locked. It is recommended to clean the sliding table once a week, and to remove all sawdust and chips which gradually slow down the sliding table. Never use oil or grease! Disconnect the machine form the power source, pull mains plug. Loosen screws, lift and remove the front cabinet cover (CC, Fig 25). Fig 23 Start the machine with precaution. 7.7 Blade tilt 45° and 90° positive stop adjustment The blade tilt positive stops can be adjusted with an allen key (Fig 24). 7.6 Rip fence setup Rip fence setup shall never be performed when the machine is running. Note: The rip fence profile can be placed flat and adjusted in length. -The cutting of small work pieces (width less than 120mm) shall only be performed with the rip fence profile placed flat (Fig 22). Fig 25 Remove the lock knob (GG, Fig 26) and lower the dust port (BB). Fig 24 8. Maintenance and inspection General notes: Maintenance, cleaning and repair work may only be carried out after the machine is protected against accidental starting by pulling the mains plug. Insane CRKT Squid Collection by JT’s Knife Life

BladeHQ released an exclusive CRKT Burnley Squid with a Jade G-10 handle and D2 Steel blade. Doing what any sensible EDC fanatic does, I went to youtube to see if there were any live videos and reviews. In the search, I stumbled upon a video titled “CRKT Squid Collection, With A New Addition!” by the YouTuber JT’s Knife Life.

A 14-minute long video that walks through his collection of various models from the CRKT Squid line. Such a refreshing video to see a collection based upon an affordable line from CRKT from an actual real-life knife collector. Not a video from CRKT or a sponsored video from a big-time YouTuber. Just an average joe sharing his thoughts and his collection. Super enjoyable video. The comments are even pretty wholesome too!

So the newly released BladeHQ exclusive CRKT Squid is not featured as this video is 10 months old but, JT does have a CRKT Squid with Jade G10 Scales and a black coated D2 Steel. This one looks absolutely fantastic! BladeHQ will have a restock coming soon and I will probably pick one up then.

Make sure to check out JT’s Knife Life channel and Instagram.

5 Knives That Make Me Happy

My eyes were closed and my lips were floating. In an instant, Maud picked up her clothes, or at least some of it, and ran out. The maid's voice was heard: Miss, oh, miss, and moisture. A minute later I finished and my sperm began to flow down her pantyhose. I fell on the grass and lay there for two minutes.
