  • Email address (use a professional sounding address – no nicknames)


These are the only contact details required – there is no need to include your full address, date of birth, marital status etc. They are not required at such an early stage in the application process, and you shouldn’t circulate too much personal information online for security purposes.

The top of your CV plays a very important role, because it is the first thing a recruiter will see upon opening the document, and you only have a few seconds to get their attention.

It’s up to you whether you include your hobbies and interests in your CV or not – They won’t usually make a big difference in any hiring decisions (good or bad)

    • Action verbs like "coordinated", "prepared", and "maintained" do a really effective job of demonstrating ownership.

95% of all resume objectives are useless. That is, in 95% of cases an administrative assistant would be better off leaving off a resume objective altogether.

Why? Because most of the time they are boring, generic, and aren't customized for each job application. Think about it, when you read something and the opening paragraph is boring are you likely to continue reading?

The same principle applies to your resume. The goal with a resume objective is to convince the hiring manager that it is worth the time to continue to seriously consider your resume.

How can you do that? Here are a few high level tips to get you started:

  • Don't be afraid to inject your personality. Can you relate to the mission of the company you're applying to? Why are you excited about the role?
  • Customize it for each application! Only include a resume objective if you're going to take the time to craft an effective one.
  • Keep it 2-3 sentences. Any longer than that, and the hiring manager will skim or ignore it.
  • Quickly make the case why you deserve an interview by talking about your skills or relevant past work experiences.

So the formula for your resume objective should be "your relevant skills or work experiences" + "why you're a great fit for the role or are especially interested in the company".

You're an administrative assistant with many talents, how do you know which of these skills to include on your resume? And how are you supposed to include them?

The skills you include in the "skills" section of your resume should be dictated by the job you're applying to. The reason is that before a human ever looks at your resume, an automated computer system called an applicant tracking system (ATS) will screen incoming resumes for certain keywords.

If your resume doesn't contain a certain percentage of the right keywords, you will be rejected before the hiring manager can even look at your resume!

The keywords the ATS is looking for can be found in the job description. That's why it's important to customize your skills section for each job you apply to.

For example, if you're applying for a medical administrative assistant role and they repeatably mention they are looking for a candidate with experience working with EMR, then you better be sure to include EMR in the skills section of your resume.

For the skills you decide to add to your resume, you should add them to two places:

  • A dedicated "skills" section on your resume.
  • In your work experience talk about the context of how you used those skills. If you know Microsoft Excel, how did you use Excel in your past job?
