My journey from 0 to 1K followers on GitHub

Hello Dev Community 👋

I’m unbelievably humbled to have hit this mark, much obliged to the 1000+ folks who found my weekend's sip of code worthy of following! Despite all the problems we faced, 2020 has been a great year for me and now, I'm starting 2021 on this happy note.

Vinit Shahdeo Year in Review

Back in 2016, I was introduced to GitHub during my college days at VIT and I found it so interesting that it soon became my homepage. The advent of this journey was marked by a simple web application performing basic calculations like squaring and cubing a number on GitHub and now when I look back, the green dots on my profile show how far I have come.

Vinit Shahdeo GitHub Contribution's chart

Recently I've accomplished a self-set milestone of becoming trending #1 developer on GitHub.

In the last two years, I have been part of many open-source programs(GSSoC, SWoC, Hacktoberfest, etc.) where I got a chance to engage with the community and mentored many beginners to kickstart their open-source journey. Sometimes, I feel like I am not able to enjoy my favorite series on Netflix but helping beginners to create their first-ever pull request compensates for these missed moments. Along the way, I met a lot of amazing developers who are transforming open-source into a more and more awesome space. Always grateful to the community for making GitHub a better place to stalk!

Last year when pandemic hit us, I built a COVID-19 😷 Tracker 🇮🇳 which got featured in newspapers.

I’m sure you’ll agree that, at this point, it isn’t an exaggeration to say that we are at war against the coronavirus and that it is a war we must win. The next few weeks are critical in this battle. I request everyone to stay at home and enjoy good time with family.

A pandemic often brings websites with misleading information along with it. With this spirit, I built a COVID-19 Tracker to protect people from falling into the trap of rumours. Being a human who can code, I couldn't think anything better to give back to the society.

Lastly, never compare your first chapter with someone else’s last chapter. Your first repository can even contain a code to check if a number is even or odd, but someone may benefit from it. As time goes by, you can contribute by addressing issues, contributing to the codebase, reviewing others’ code, and improving documentation. In the future, your digital footprint will carry more weightage than your resume. GitHub is the best place where aspiring software engineers can build their portfolio.

I highly believe that if you're a techie, your homepage should be GitHub, not Instagram. Maintain a streak on GitHub as you maintain one on Snapchat. Get addicted to the green dots. Participate in competitions, connect with developers, indulge in communities and learn from everyone.

DISCLAIMER: The code you write matters more than the followers you have. Having less number of followers on GitHub doesn't mean that the person is a newbie. I always agree that the number of followers should never be a metric to define a stellar GitHub profile. However, a GitHub profile with more followers doesn’t hurt 😉. Having green contribution streaks makes your profile more attractive, and people might actually follow you!

Thank you for reading this 💙. Listen to the podcast below where I've shared my journey!

PS: Grateful to GitHub for the dark theme 🖤, I'm no longer suffering from the retina-burning white theme of default UI.

How I Got 5,000 GitHub Followers In Less Than 24 Hours

After a discussion with a friend of mine I’ve decided to do a blog post about a program I created called “Githug”, and how I used to get to the front of Github.com.

Some background is necessary, I am very into designing web bots to do all sorts of crazy stuff. I often end up building bots just for the hell of it or just because I think something will be funny (to me at least!).  I’d also like to state I don’t dislike Github in anyway rather I think they’re all pretty cool guys!

The initial idea came to me while I was chilling in one of my college courses sitting next to my friend who is a solid programmer (something I sadly am not). He had an upcoming interview at a tech company that he was excited about and he mentioned that they would be checking his Github page to see code samples. I jokingly said that I should get him thousands of fake followers to “beef up” his page and make him look like a huge developer. We made some more jokes about what I’d call the bot and decided “Githug” would be a clever name. After joking I probed around Github’s registration system and found out that it didn’t seem like it’d be too complicated to do! I think the rest is a bit…self explanatory.

Excuse me for the stupid anime references, this whole thing was just a joke from the beginning.

The script was a pretty straightforward one, all it would do is utilize fake usernames from FakeNameGenerator in conjunction with a disposable email address service all over tor.

That’s quite a mouthful, but all it means is I put some effort into making it look not completely fake (to Github’s systems, in-case they would limit my account creations). After every account was created it would then follow my friend’s Github and logout immediately afterwards. The script would then change it’s exist node “identity” and repeat this process all over again – all while recording the created accounts for later use and noting any errors along the way.

For those who care, the script was created via my Metafid code generation tool which is PHP/cURL based. Yes, I do realize the irony of linking to my Github repo here :)

Initial repo – a bit more cocky than I intended :)

I won’t mention what happened to my friend’s Github but let’s say it worked out very well for him (clever readers will probably find it regardless). I will however, post pictures of my Github when I ran this tool continuously for ~20 hours.

Okay, just kidding. What do you want from Katya: to fuck or lick her after me. You are asking me some strange question, Tengiz.

Now discussing:

What was happening below the scrotum between the legs, I could not see only felt how bite after bite followed, then in the buttock, then in the leg, then right next. To the anus. wider. And Alex took her hand and put it on the clitoris, as if hinting that he did not mind at all that Vika gave herself a little pleasure.

And she gave him what he longed for.
